None of the top guys were as vulnerable to Jones' wrestling as Gane was.
Jones returned at the precise moment he wouldn't have to fight a dangerous champion for the belt. With Gane coming off a loss, nobody was more deserving than anyone else and Gane was selected to fight Jones precisely because of the likely mismatch it presented, which we saw repeated again with Stipe.
Gane wasn’t coming off a loss - he KOed Tuivasa after losing his TS against Ngannou. And Ngannou was his only loss.
Again, I’m not saying Gane wasn’t a favorable match up for Jones. But he had as much of a claim to a TS as anyone else in the division at the time and arguably the most.
