I’ve heard that Floyd had a tough sparring match against Errol Spence Jr. Some even believing that Spence got the better of him. I know that’s been validated by both guys. I’ve also heard that Zab Judah and Lamont Peterson both got the better of Floyd in sparring matches. Is there any validation for that?

Maybe, but Paul Spadfora gave him fits and that meant nothing. Sparring doesn't equate to anything really.

What’s Floyd always saying. It’s what happens under the lights that matters.

i have seen floyd spar probably 100 times and have never been impressed other than by his incredible stamina. he certainly doesnt look like a guy that is among the greatest of all time. of course that isnt because of a lack of ability, but because he is more interested on working on things than "winning" a sparring match. and when zab supposedly beat him a couple years ago, he wasnt even in the same city.

also, remember when guys go in there with floyd, they are taking it as their title shot. so while floyd is working on some little aspect of his game, the guy he is sparring is fighting harder than he probably ever has in his life

/thread.

Ps, really not a fan of Mayweather but this guy hits it clean, bang smack in the middle of the button.

Sparring is not always a good indicator of how fighters would do against one another in a sanctioned bout. The reason being is that a lot of fighters take sparring as an opportunity to work on technique, and put themselves in spots where they have to employ new skills. Ali was notorious for looking bad in sparring, but - as was recorded by Norman Mailer in the lead up to the Rumble in the Jungle - Ali would lay on the ropes and try to hone his defense.

While true, Zab and Floyd had trained with each other when they were teenagers. I don't think it is a stretch to say that Zab had "beat" Floyd in one of their sparring sessions.

Thankyou so much for summarizing perfectly why all those stories mean absolute dick.

for sure. i was talking about the one a couple years ago where it was widely reported that zab put it to floyd and zab was in detroit or chicago or something when it supposedly happened

Good for Lamont, I guess.

Its sparring doubt floyds going hard as possible. besides hes old could see a young volumep puncher who targets the body like spence giving him a run in sparring. Keep in mind a few rounds of sparring doesnt give tou the opportunity to adjust and out point to a 12 Rd decision like Floyds known for lol.

This brings up another point, which is the round length when Floyd spars. What I recall hearing from people who have been there, it's 5 minute rounds with 15 second breaks (I think that's what he did when he recorded sparring with Omar Henry too - rip), and sometimes longer. @ProBoxingInsidr is that accurate from your experience in the gym?

It's known that they actually sparred a LOT during the latter part of Floyd's career as well, when Zab was on his own career hiatus after fighting Danny Garcia.

We all know Floyd's fortay is defense, and it' not beyond reason to think at times he just sits there and let's the other guy wail on him, while he sits in the pocket defending and parrying. in a match maybe the otehr guy would be "winning" cause of work and contact when in sparring none of that shit matters in the first place. OP it's sparring, and most people don't really care. Just like the Paulie - McNugget stuff. No doubt Magic Man startches Conor in a real boxing match.

RIP Omar Henry. good dude and a hometown hero. Nice to hear someone remembering him. But yeah there's been plenty of times where Floyd looked less than himself in sparring then goes on to decimate whoever he was scheduled to fight, I don't read too much into it. I wouldn't be surprised about the 5 min rounds dudes a gym rat.

yea, he usually went 5 minute rounds. breaks were definitely shorter. 30 seconds is what i remember most, but certainly could have been 15
