to be fair you only catch a beast like that once and he understandably wanted to make sure he was done, no telling what vengeance a monster like Jones might have wreaked had he been released too soon.
 
He was rock hard, so I'd imagine he had trouble getting himself off the opponent. Mike Beltran needed to apply extra strength to release the sub.
 
I mean in the post fight he said he thought it was Jones tapping. He is extremely inexperienced, so it's possible. However, that was probably bs.
 
It took him 2+ minutes to beat a guy that is 1-1, literally hasn't fought in a decade and his only pro fights were at welterweight. How the hell did Bellator find this guy for Hager to fight?
 
I honestly think he was just frustrated that the Sherdogger actually put up some resistance and fought off the first few submission attempts.
 
I'll assume it was just inexperience but if he's doing it to push his WWE heel gimmick it's bullshit. We'll see if he does it again in his next fight.

I mean, your assessment is sound either way, but it should be noted that the T.J. Jones that Coker found at the beef plant is not the welterweight who hadn't fought in a decade.

T.J. "Tombstone" Jones was 1-1 as a pro and debuted in 2015 as a heavyweight and last fought in the fall of 2017.

Not to be confused with T.J. Jones, the 1-1 welterweight who last fought in 2009.
