Last year, after Disney had the temerity to issue a statement opposing one of his prized legislative initiatives, Ron DeSantis punished the company by removing its self-governing status. (DeSantis justified the maneuver as a removal of unjustified privileges, but he had not previously opposed Disney’s status and made little attempt to disguise its nakedly retaliatory nature).

On Monday, he took matters much further. DeSantis appointed a board to oversee Disney. The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District is stacked with DeSantis cronies...

While the board handles infrastructure and maintenance, DeSantis boasted that it could use its leverage to force Disney to stop “trying to inject woke ideology” on children.

“When you lose your way, you’ve got to have people that are going to tell you the truth,” DeSantis proclaimed. “So we hope they can get back on. But I think all of these board members very much would like to see the type of entertainment that all families can appreciate.”

It is worth pausing a moment to grasp the full breadth of what is going on here. First, DeSantis established the principle that he can and will use the power of the state to punish private firms that exercise their First Amendment right to criticize his positions. Now he is promising to continue exerting state power to pressure the firm to produce content that comports with his own ideological agenda.

...

I'm interested in hearing from our "this is 1984" and "free speech" boys. Are you OK with government censorship here? Is it OK when it's under the guise of fighting "woke ideology?"

In order to control Disney's content, DeSantis would have to buy the company - like Musk bought Twitter.

Looks like a stunt to show he can rival Trump in terms of authoritative overreach, which is very popular among the GOP base it seems.

If he's appointing the whole board then that's a different beast. I thought he only appointed a portion of the board. And this is far more intrusive government than anything we've seen from left or right recently. Although in the long run, I expect Disney to slowly buy off the board and continue business as usual.

Should clarify that I mean the business of running of the special district. DeSantis and this board are going to have zero power over the company itself.

Yes, it's not likely that he can actually do much, fortunately. He's just rabble-rousing the rubes, because he knows this plays well with them, despite their being, ostensibly at least, strongly opposed to government censorship.

I actually wanted to like this guy at first since in a lot of ways he was a big improvement over Rick Scott but nah, he's an authoritarian goofball. Sad because part of me wants to see a Florida governor make it to the White House but now I hope Trump runs this guy over in the primary.

Dude is putting on a performance and the American fascist party loves it.

It's continually disappointing to me how fake rightists are. Like, I thought this whole attack on social media was probably dishonest at the elite level, but most regular people probably just stupidly bought into it and really (wrongly) thought that trying to force social media to be more right-wing was a pro-free-speech position. But seeing the support for those same people for RDS just shows that it was an act.

Needs to work on that nickname though. Ron DeSanctimonious just doesn't work well.

Yep, so much of it is just performative BS. And their acting skills are even worse than Seagal's.

Build your own Florida, move, or vote him out. He just won by 20 points, so it seems being anti-groomer is pretty popular.

I can't think of many times where the people telling young children "don't tell your parents about our fascination with your genitals" were the good guys.

So what actual power does this board have on the company? On the private property of the company or the actual running of the company. Other then what they have on any other company?

Lol libtards so jealous.
? How did you come to that conclusion? Do you think Disney is a libtard facility? You ever been to Disney World?

Honestly, Disney could very easily just say.. y'know what... Fuck Florida and move to Louisiana/ Texas/ South Carolina or whatever and Florida's economy would take a massive hit. Keep it up fucko.

A lot of these states offer gigantic incentives for something as simple as an Amazon fulfillment centre, you think it'd be difficult for Disney to find a new home?

DeSantis wants to pretend that it hasn't been a mutually beneficial relationship between the state and the company, and that is, like most things coming from the GOP in the past 5 years, absolute bullshit.

I think you already know the answer is none. Disney headquarters is in Burbank, they just have a theme park in Florida that is no longer running as its own state. This is for fire department, road maintenance and other municipal services that already applied to every other park in the state.

Be wary when the people who never saw a tax hike or regulation they didn't love suddenly turn into libertarians when it's a corporation running as its own country in a state it isn't headquartered in.

Personally I would much rather have Biden run against Meatball Ron because than Trump because much like the rest of the GOP he hasn't learned a damn from the utter failure of the red wave due which was due in large part to culture war bullshit and weirdo candidates. Besides Meatball Ron is a bad debater, he's akward has the charisma of an old dust mop best of all if he beats Trump in the primary then WWC GOP voters won't turn out for him in the election and his culture war bullshit will chase away swing voters.
