Demian Maia: Smashing the Guard - An analysis of pathways to the mount and back (gif heavy study)

Great! I've been waiting for this! Thanks !

Wow i actually read all of that! Quite the accomplishment for a.d. me. Really cool stuff. Great read, i loved it. simple and effective! Maia's m.o.

Jeez, that must have taken some time. Thanks a million for doing that.

Also, Jack Slack's tweet took me here.

I've had a decent percentage of it done for quite a while, so it wasn't too bad! My darce and Lucas Leite projects are taking forever though! So I used this to clear out some writers block on those.

Slack is that dude!

Tis a glorious age!

Now we need an American graduate to drop some wrestling bombs...

The idea of the top player always having to pressure the guard player was probably the biggest tip I took away from training MMA. Guys were standing up on me left and right at the beginning; now it's one of the main concepts I use to pass in any ruleset.

dude. this is the shit. Awesome stuff. I've been trying to work dope mount into my game a bit more and this was really helpful.

How much do you think what Maia does is variant of the over-under pass? I might have missed it in your breakdown. It seems like from that headquarters position he works the hips and depending on what they give him with the butterfly hook he can switch through to the dope mount or tripod up and go to over-under type pass. This just occurred to me because I do a lot of over-under passing and have been thinking about how switching my hips to the dope mount might "weave in" with that game. (see what I did there... "weave in" to dope mount... get it...)

Im downloading it as docx and it is already over 100 megabytes...is that right?

Just curious for anyone that really knows Maia's game. I just re-watched Ryan Hall's guard passing and also his arm triangles dvd sets. And the dope mount/leg weave position that Maia loves so much is so wide open for kata gatama, D'arce chokes, and even guillotine chokes without positional risk. In fact they can even be used to advance position.

That seems right up Maia's alley and I'm surprised he doesn't attempt them.

I guess he just feels that getting the back >>> everything else and works for it above anything else? I can't think of many times Maia has gone for a sub in MMA if it wasn't from the mount or the back aside from a few times.

I honestly think front headlock attacks are the most important submissions to spend time on, both for reasons of wide availibility and dominant control. Double wristlock attacks and leg entanglements are tied for second, then back attacks.

For everything else, there's pressure card.

Pretty legit when Josh Barnett praises your work.

He definitely uses over under passes a lot too, I couldn't really include it as I was trying to keep it from being ridiculously long. Check out these fights...

That's probably about right.

I'd love to see it too! I honestly don't know why. My best guess is that he's trying to avoid scrambles if at all possible, I rarely ever saw Maia get swept or reversed when studying him, almost everytime he ended up on the bottom was from a scramble.

Your breakdowns are well done and a great wealth of knowledge.

Thanks for doing them.

Josh

Damn! Thanks Josh, you're the man!
