Defense Soap.. worth it?

I have been using the soap and the wipes for about a month now.. the wipes first right after bjj class due to my 20 minute drive then the soap at home. I still have skin issues.. nothing has changed as I had high hopes. The products might work for some folks but I haven't had any luck. It's actually has gotten to the point that I am tired of dealing with the skin problems and I am thinking of finding another sport/hobby

Can you give me a call at 866-544-1689. We can troubleshoot your routine. I created this product to keep people from quitting grappling. It would be a shame for anyone to drop out because of a skin infection.

what type of skin prolems?

yeah man, pretty much the worst thing about bjj is the hygiene aspect. body to body contact with other sweaty guys on a regular basis is probably riskier than stickin it in the pooper. i dont think ill ever stop though

Find a gym that provides showers.

Been using defense soap for about a year now, all of the usual skin problems I had after training disappeared.

The only difference between you and me is that my gym provides shower.

I don't want to stop (3 stripe blue)... I love it, but dang every time I turn around I have to take 2 weeks off due to skin issues. . Like right now I haven't put on a gi in over a week.. itchy red bumps on my neckline/jawline.. look like mosquito bites ( but they are not..haha) and they itch like crazy. I have a revolving prescription for anti fungal cr

Do you shower or shave before you roll? The red spots on your chin...does your gi rub across your chin? What are you washing your gi in?

Three of four things pop into mind just from what you posted. Give me a call and block your number if you are more comfortable with it.

i would think itchy red bumps are more likely bacterial than fungal. are they poppable? We're you told by a doc to use antifungal cream or you just decided to do it? If you decided on your own, then maybe try just using triple antibiotic ointment.

i get individual red bumps soemtimes that i think are folliculitis. internets says it can be fungal or bacterial but ive used tripl antibiotic on it usually and it goes away in a few days.

Well..they gave me both an antifungal and a bacteria ointment. Just said to use one and if it isn't working try the other... I have even been to the dermatologist and they basically gave me the same creams.. lol

I admit that I haven't read this whole thread, but have you tried the barrier foam? I used to feel like I was getting a lot skin issues and I haven't had a single issue since I started using the barrier foam and wipes (I have an hour train ride home and sometimes the line for the shower might take 30 minutes, so I'll just use the wipes and go home).

I'm not saying the foam is definitely the reason for the turn around because there are plenty of other variables (including a new gym), but I'm just pointing out that something is working.

I'm just curious if you change into street clothes on your commute home. Does your gym clean the mats consistently?

Do you clean your gym bag? you put in dirty clothes in it. Do you wash all your gear including belts, headgear, kneepads, etc?

You seem like a clean, hygiene conscious person. You might have a low threshold for skin issues. Some people are prone to things like that. I have a mild case of acne issue that could bleed, drip pus so I'm mild of that when I train. If I'm breaking out I skip training out of respect, hygiene for fellow training partners.

I use defense soap and I like it. So far no skin infections beside my acne issue.

I know it's coming from the gym I train at. I have been there about a year and a half and that's when the skin issues started. Before ,I traveled an hour away to train bjj for about 4 to 5 years and never had an issue. This affiliate club opened up a couple years ago and now I workout with them mostly...12 minute drive versus and hour.. but it appears I may have to change again.

I called Guy at Defense Soap and we talked about different things to do to prevent and so I'll give those a try and see what happens. He kindly sent me some free products to help.. Seemed like a real nice fellow so I don't understand most of the hate .. Thanks again guy

Guy is a good dude. Most of the hate is because people who are skeptics and think Guy is just about making money and selling snake oil. I disagree with them and believe Guy truly cares about the grappling community. I had a staph infection once and then started using defense soap never had a problem since.

I feel cleaner and I like the way it smells. It's my everyday soap.

Yeah, it has become my every day soap too. I use the bar soap and on days where I roll and am not showering afterwards (like open mat saturday morning) I use the wipes. My son is almost 6 and trains BJJ and I used the body gel for him.

Regular soap is fine. What I do after a roll is I usually take a quick shower with deodorant soap. Irish spring. Then I run the bath water. Get the Epsom salt. Dump about 2 pounds in a full hot bath tub. Then I sit and soak in there for about an Hour or two While I watch some Netflix from my waterproof Sony xperia Z.
do you train 2x/month? that is a lot of epsom salt for someone who trains 3x/week

am i mistaken, or did defense soap used to say '100% tea tree essential oil'? i remember thinking, 'how is that possible' for the consistency the liquid was.

looking at the ingredients list now its got a lot of other stuff

The tea tree oil used was 100% tea tree essential oil. Soap is more than just the essential oils though, and always was.

yeah, i guess i was talking about the liquid body wash, not the bar soap, but even that i have to assume could not have been 100% tea tree oil.

but saying the tea tree oil used was 100% tea tree oil... is like saying this is 100% orange juice. its got 50% water, and 50% juice, but the juice is 100% juice.
