I'm going to put my money on the lion. The lion is made for killing, the gorilla is not. I have never seen a Gorilla go through with an attack, not to mention actually killing something. They always just charge, and at the most just make a quick statement.
I think it would be overwhelmed by the ferocity of a lion.

A gorilla does pack some insane strength though. So if it actually had the mentality and skills to kill, I think the gorilla could do some serious damage. But in reality this will be a one-sided victory for the lion.

I've done my research on the deep web, but have never been. It's a lot of heresy and urban legends... no proof or explicit reference of mixed animal fights aside from internet forum posts.

I'll say no.

They're gentle giants. Don't be fooled though, an alpha male silverback is going to be tough for even a large lion. Leopards hunt small gorillas, like many species though the male alpha of a species usually is prey of nothing.

Gorilla's are more agile and can manoeuvre better. The Lion has to bank on seriously injuring the Gorilla on it's first attack because the Gorilla will crush it's skull. If the Gorilla caught a leg or paw or neck or skull or back, it can crush bone with ease.

And Lions lay around 20+ hours a day.
 
A lion isn't the most bad assed land animal... but I think he would take the gorilla pretty easily.
 
I'm thinking the Gorilla would go for the Lions bollocks.

Cats are the most badass p4p mammal. Think of this, a 170 lbs cat vs 170 lbs primate? I don't know about you guys, but my ass ain't fighting no 170 lb cat, they are too badass p4p for a primate (even myself :icon_chee ) to handle.

Siberian Tigers are fucking badass... fucking 5 inch claws. You don't fuck with giant cats with 5 inch claws... fucking stupid
 
A Gorilla would rip the lions lower jaw off. A silverback is so ridiculously powerful it would obliterate the lion IMO...
 
Silverback gorilla = 300-400 lbs in the wild.

Male African lion = 350-550 lbs in the wild.

Gorilla: eats mostly fruit, some leaves, stems, and insects

Lion: kills to eat. A carnivore.

Gorilla: top speed is about 25 miles per hour

Lion: top speed is about 50 miles per hour

The lion is going to, on average, outweigh the gorilla by 100 pounds, be twice as fast, and be the vastly more experienced killer. I'm going to go with the lion.
 
This debate has been going on since 2004 with my friends and I. I even asked the "King of Africa" at this wildlife reserve that has mainly predators called "Out of Africa" he sat there and contemplated it for a second, then proceeded to tell me it was a stupid question and I shouldn't have asked it.

The lion wouldn't fight the gorilla the same way it would prey (latch on and bite the throat). The lion would face up and paw away, cutting up the gorilla over and over again. It would be too quick for the gorilla to defend and stay too light on its feet to let the gorilla move in and try something.

The gorilla gets a hold of him once, squeezes whatever he has ahold of and rips it off the body causing great pain to the lion. He can also at the same time he grabs him, donkey punch him with the other. Lion ain't taking that.

Lion likes to go for the neck always, well that's gonna be a problem with a Silverback Gorilla.
