DEA Agrees To Reschedule Marijuana Under Federal Law

https://www.marijuanamoment.net/dea...biden-directed-health-agencys-recommendation/

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has made a historic decision—agreeing with the top federal health agency and proposing to move marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).

The decision comes more than 50 years after cannabis was first listed as a strictly prohibited drug, on par with heroin and defined as a substance with no known medical value and a significant abuse potential.

Moving cannabis to another schedule will not legalize it, however. Participants in state cannabis markets would continue to run afoul of federal law, and existing criminal penalties for certain marijuana-related activity would remain in force.

DEA’s decision means it has generally accepted the findings from a nearly year-long scientific review into cannabis that HHS carried out before sharing its scheduling recommendation.

HHS determined that cannabis “has a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States” and has a “potential for abuse less than the drugs or other substances in Schedules I and II.”

“There exists widespread, current experience with medical use of the substance by [health care practitioners] operating in accordance with implemented jurisdiction-authorized programs, where medical use is recognized by entities that regulate the practice of medicine,” HHS said.

In terms of relative safety compared to other substances, the federal health review concluded that “the risks to the public health posed by marijuana are low compared to other drugs of abuse (e.g., heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines), based on an evaluation of various epidemiological databases for [emergency department] visits, hospitalizations, unintentional exposures, and most importantly, for overdose deaths.”

This is way past due and not enough, but a step in the right direction.

The majority of Americans support federal legalization, it is one of the most clear example of partisan public and big money interests obstructing the will of the people that has medical science backing.

Weed is good for the sheeple and Democrats greatly over-index in pot consumption. Check! More voters that will be giving up even more IQ points with little to spare

Biden admin taking credit for this yet?

Yes, as they should:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will move to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, The Associated Press has learned, a historic shift to generations of American drug policy that could have wide ripple effects across the country.

The DEA’s proposal, which still must be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget, would recognize the medical uses of cannabis and acknowledge it has less potential for abuse than some of the nation’s most dangerous drugs. However, it would not legalize marijuana outright for recreational use.

The agency’s move, confirmed to the AP on Tuesday by five people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive regulatory review, clears the last significant regulatory hurdle before the agency’s biggest policy change in more than 50 years can take effect.

Once OMB signs off, the DEA will take public comment on the plan to move marijuana from its current classification as a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin and LSD. It moves pot to Schedule III, alongside ketamine and some anabolic steroids, following a recommendation from the federal Health and Human Services Department. After the public comment period and a review by an administrative judge, the agency would eventually publish the final rule.

It comes after President Joe Biden called for a review of federal marijuana law in October 2022 and moved to pardon thousands of Americans convicted federally of simple possession of the drug. He has also called on governors and local leaders to take similar steps to erase marijuana convictions.

“Criminal records for marijuana use and possession have imposed needless barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities,” Biden said in December. “Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. It’s time that we right these wrongs.”

Weed, abortion and porn is all this country cares about anymore.

With all the support Cannabis has, which is way more than abortion, there is very little advocacy or push from the public.
I have been keeping track of this issue for 2 years and there are never any threads about the political news regarding it here. And very little attention from mainstream media.

All everyone cares about is transgenders, Trump, Biden, race, foreign affairs, wokeism, cancel culture.
A tremendous amounts of inanities which have little impact compared to the prohibition of a plant that has many health benefits as a safer analgesic for example, has a great potential for economic growth, jobs, taxes to put into our communities, and whose criminalization only benefits the criminal and for prison profits/law enforcement rackets.

If only the users weren’t so complacent and being satisfied with state-level legalization/decriminalization or simply breaking the law as long as they have easy access. The non-using supporters give even less of a shit to make a push.

The benefits of legalizing weed far outweigh the negatives. There is no reason that marijuana should be illegal while alcohol and cigarettes remain legal, given the drastic difference in disease from long-term usage. And if anything, weed calms people down more so it would prevent people from experiencing the violence often associated with alcohol use.

The fact that it remains illegal despite it's relative safety compared to alcohol/cigarettes and overall popularity for legalization is ridiculous.

Another crazy thing about the plant, is that it is super versatile. It can be used for textiles, medicine, even as a form of alternative gas, and also grows quickly. It sounds corny to say, but it could also fight climate change with all its uses. Going green would be literal! lol

I live in Missouri, a red county.

My town has a Casino, but not a dispensary. "it's a turn off"
I can hit 10 dispensaries within 5/8 miles

The clientele are older upper middle class or just plain old.
