I think we need to wait for more of the story about RDR to come out.
It makes no sense how he managed 5 rounds against Whittaker in a far tougher fight yet faded after 1.5 rounds grappling with Brendan Allen. He was dominating Allen on the ground in the first round before he gassed.
He was dominating positionally, but that's it. He never managed to land any damaging ground strikes or get close to a submission. Allen was always aware of what RDR was doing and stayed safe on bottom. RDR started taking more chances, which in turn gave Brendan an opening for his reversals. Once Allen got his reads in those grappling exchanges and actually delivered some damage to de Ridder, the trajectory of the fight changed.
Allen has done this many times.
