That Prime Shogun was a boss.

Darren Till talked big, but couldn't walk the walk really. It was similar in a way of a match up where one fighter is karate based and the other is muaythai based, but at a lower level match up than a Machida - Shogun fight.

That fight for me had a huge anticipation and hype, where on one side was the best LHW in the world in Shogun Rua, and on the other, the undefeated karate fighter, who at the time had the invincible aura that was as good as they come, tho you would only know it if you were around back then, since Machida have been getting knocked around pretty good in late portion of his career.

Against a counter striker like Thomson, but someone who's more lethal and undefeated and a champion in Machida, Shogun pressed the action all the way through and really became the first one to solve that Machida puzzle, winning the fight clearly but in the judge's eyes, unlike Darren Till who talked big but ended up fighting cautious all night.

For me, that fight is one of the best fights of all time. That had the quality of fighters, and the fight itself, hype and anticipation, the undefeated fighter vs the best fighter, with the title on the line.

And that wasn't even a prime Shogun.

Yes, Shogun and Lyotos first fight was one of the most dramatic I had seen up til that point.
All the questions surrounding Rua going in against all the legit hype surrounding Machida.
I remember after that fight instant rematches became a thing.
Soon after was Frankie and Maynards next fights. Miss those days.

I agree to a certain extent, but imo Thompson is much more elusive than Machida therefore a much more trickier opponent

Someone wasn't watching much MMA back when Machida was coming into his prime

Imagine if Shogun or Till had any form of decent Thai kicking technique, their fights maybe wouldn't have went the full 25 minutes...

Still today Machida'd punish his opponents at their first mistake.
Thomspon, with all the respect, is not a sniper like Lyoto is.

Lyoto > WB

Shogun > Till
Evolution of MMA is some garbage Hoe Rogaine came up with while on drugs.

Many of the greats from a decade ago (in their primes) would destroy some of the guys today.

Machida almost never got hit at all across his first 15 fights, up to the first Shogun one. He is and always was less exaggerated with his footwork than Thompson maybe, but he was THEE elusive fighter when he was on the way up and at his quickest and most agile

in other words, you just made that shit up lol we'll just agree to disagree then bro

until Lyoto got knocked out in their second fight nobody was able to do shit to him other then maybe Sam Greco and Shogun in the first fight. I'm not a fan of fofo karate shit but Lyoto was the top guy at that point until he ran into Shogun. I really don't see what you're getting at with being a dick all the way up to his fights with Shogun that was Lyoto in his prime. After the Shogun fight his chin crcaked it happens I'm sure being beat back to back fucked up his mindset too but until those fights with Shogun there wasn't any doubts about Lyoto being #1.

Thompson sucks compared to Machida. The pure disrespect thrown on Machida is amazing. He's a former world champion which is more than Wonderbore ever was. And he's far more dynamic on the feet and far more clinical.
