People need to stop with this idea that Darren Till is some absurd monster of a welterweight. He is a 'large' welterweight who would be an 'average' or even 'slightly small' middleweight. Not monstrous, ginormous, or herculean. And certainly not a LHW.

Nordine Taleb is just as big as Till at WW, and fought on the same card. Till isn't some size-freak. He is larger than average but not freaky-big.

The dude that Neil Magny kneed was bigger than Till, for example. Just as thick as Till and taller--really can't argue with that. Tom Breese at WW was bigger too.

If you want to see really huge WWs, consider Hyun Gyu Lim or Anthony Johnson back in the day. Steve Montgomery, from the TUF Blackzilians ATT season, would be another example.

“He is a large WW”.....that’s the problem TS. Without the weight cutting then all these men would have to fight men their own size. If he walks around at 210 then I want to see him fight other men who walk around 200-225 at their walk around weights.

Till probably steps into the cage at 190-195, as do other welterweights. Of course not everyone is going to be exactly the same size; that's impossible unless you had a hundred tiny weightclasses

'Walk around weight', ie, how fat guys get in the off season, is irrelevant and always has been. Kelvin Gastelum is not a huge MW despite his 'walk-around weight', nor was Johnny Hendricks ever a particularly large welterweight, nor was Quinton Jackson a massive LHW etc etc

“How fat guys get”.....then that’s on them. If they choose to be professional fighters and let themselves get out of shape and hurt their career.

As a fan I just want three things; the best fights possible, to see who the best fighters actually are and fighter safety. Extreme weight cutting hurts all three of those.

Why would anyone want to continue on the archaic weight cutting trail? Shouldn’t all “fight fans” want the same three things?

fair enough... but weighing them right before they get in would still have some weight-cutting. And at least weight cutting has gotten less extreme than it was a few yeasr ago (before the IV ban and better testing).

He is bigger than Gastelum, he would definitely be ok as a mw.

Rumble was a large WW too.

Then he fought and beat Andre Arlovski.

Till needs to stop being scared of people his own size and go to MW. He's not a WW and he's going to keep missing weight because he's unprofessional. He's also being protected from wrestlers and even though Till vs Usman should be the clear #1 contender match next IMO while Colby or RDA fight Woodley, I bet they won't make that fight yet.

It’s a shame really that it has gotten to the point it is. I understand if a guy weighs say 190 but don’t want to fight at 205, then cut the few pounds and fight at 185. But when fighters are stepping into the cage not one but two weight classes above the one their competing in, it seems a little pointless.

And anyone who is foolish enough to cut weight to weigh in immediately prior to fighting would suffer performance-wise. So that's on them. If they want the size advantage, they will pay for it.

He will fight for MW title against Whittaker at the end of 2019

This is precisely the point.
The sport is MMA. It pits to competitors against each other to test their martial arts skills. It should not be a test of who can cut the more weight and re-hydrate quickly.

Having met him, and GSP who recently won a 185 belt, Till is a monster compared to GSP.

Weirdly I remember thinking Till reminded me of Rich Franklin in terms of overall size.

I'm 6'1" and could make 145...I've been over 170 before but had a big gut and would still be dwarfed by Till in terms of bone mass and overall size

Totally agree with the OP Till has made up this story of him being a monster WW that shouldn't be allowed to fight at that weight (Kinda backfired on him this weekend) but it is a bit of Scouse Bravado. Plus he most have been under 200 lb with that stipulation for this fight.

So in your opinion a fighter should HAVE TO (not optional) stay in shape 365 days/year? That makes no sense. Walk-around weight is irrelevant. If a featherweight wants to balloon up to 180 lbs when he has no fight booked, he should be able to, if he's going to make 145 is what matters.

Imagine hurting a career of a phenomenal fighter that likes to eat a lot off camp, someone like Ferguson who has admitted to walk around at 190+ lbs but never missed weight and isn't enormous to LW by any means, does that makes sense? Not to me.

He will probably not be able to keep making WW as his frame fills out.
