I'm assuming you just watched the documentary? I remember watching that and being surprised how highly esteemed he was by so many famous musicians when he was (and largely remains) a complete unknown in popular culture.
Saw him live a few times back in the day and he did mostly Beatles covers. To Go Home, Grievances, True Love..., and Careless Soul are masterpieces. Just goes to show that you don't need to be a great instrumentalist to be a great songwriter.
