It's not like there's contenders he hasn't beat knocking down the door for a title shot.

This is a sport about personal achievements.

He can vacate the day after the fight.

Besides, isn't Gus recovering from injuries?
 
Under this statement he should instantly vacate or the UFC arrange an interim belt fight with the winner becoming champ the day after the Stipe fight.

To begin with the standard procedure should be let go the belt as soon he change weight class, specially if he's saying in advance will not return

They can just arrange a fight for the LHW belt to take place after this fight.

Better for DCs legacy to be a two weight champ simultaneously.

See the second part of my sentence. He can be a double champ. Next day winner of the interim belt becomes champ instantly.

Interim belt means something under this scheme and he doesn’t have to relinquish. The division is not held up.

GSP dumped his belt a month after winning it because he didn’t want to defend, Cormier can also be honorable.

Gus vs OSP or Shogun.

I’m sure some past LHWs will move back up from MW.

At this rate you might have Tito Ortiz come back and fight for the title in this “anything is possible” era of UFC. Hell they could make a Liddell vs Ortiz for the interim belt
