1. White probably offered Colby a very low ball number knowing he'd resist and maybe even not accept it.
2. White probably knew if he offered Colby Woodley then Colby would not agree because he wants a titleshot, and that he (Dana) would then be able to tell the media Colby ducked Woodley just to troll Colby.
Perhaps he was promised the first championship purse for a fight that has no championship. Why would he possibly accept the Woodley fight...
basically means colby is also afraid of dana, and robbie lawler got robbed of a decision winHes saying Colby ducked Usman then refused Woodley. Basically Colby only fights those he's confident he will win against, so he stays clear of both Usman and Woodley
very different situations, tbfwhy doesn't Colby just go to bellator then?
hilarious to see Colby talk so much shit... then cry about money and play the victim.
Had he taken the first opportunity to fight Woodley, even it was for scraps, he might have been champ now and 500k richer. Rose and Andrade both got paid 100k each to show in their title fight. And that was Rose's second defense. Imagine if they had complained....
After Colby Covington beat Robbie Lawler at UFC Newark, all signs pointed to him fighting welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman next. Many also expected that fight to be at UFC 244 in Madison Square Garden.
Yet, that is not the case. Instead, negotiations between the two fell apart and the UFC booked Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal as the main event of the card.
Now, speaking at the UFC 244 press conference, UFC president, Dana White explained why Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington did not come to fruition.
“So here’s the thing with that,” White said during the news conference (h/t MMA Junkie). “Obviously, you heard me say in interviews after [Diaz defeated Pettis] that was the fight I was going to make.
“So Colby Covington can say whatever he wants, but we make fights for a living. That’s what we do. We go after guys and we say, ‘This is next. This is the date. Do you want the fight?’ Obviously he wanted more money to fight Usman. We went back and forth.”
Dana White was obviously not pleased he could not get a deal with Colby Covington or Kamaru Usman. But, ‘Chaos’ says he turned it down because it was not a negotiation. Instead, it was a take it or leave it offer, and it was less money then what he was paid against Lawler.
However, according to White, Colby Covington also turned down a Tyron Woodley fight after the Kamaru Usman negotiations hit a snag.
“This is the second time he’s done it,” White said. “He had a fight in Dallas, too. So we said, ‘If you don’t want to fight Usman then we’ll give you Tyron Woodley’. He turned down Tyron Woodley, too. You either want to fight or you don’t. When Colby Covington is willing to fight, he’ll let us know.”

Dana is weird to me. Just give them their money and if the numbers suck you can lord it over their heads.
Dana White logic: "I promised Colby the title shot multiple times and keep refusing to give it to him. He turned down X contender because he wants a title shot, so obviously he's ducking this guy."
Colby probably didn't duck Woodley so much as he's demanding a fight for the belt (with fair compensation). If Woodley was the champion and the UFC were offering Colby $1 million for the title shot, I bet he'd fight Woodley in a heartbeat.
this ! they offer him a fight not a new deal $.. dont know how many fights are on his contract but nobody is getting low balled until they renegotiateSo confusing and likely untrue.
So first time- he passed up a fight against champion Woodley because he didn't get offered enough money.
Instead he fought Robbie Lawler... according to him for money than he would have made fighting the champ?
And again- he passes up a fight against champion Kumaru... according to him, because he would have earned less money than he made fighting Lawler?
Neither of these 2 situations seem believable.
It's highly unlikely that the UFC would offer him more money to fight non-champions than champions on 2 occasions.
At worst, he'll get equal money offered- in which case, it still makes sense to take the championship fight.
And the general approach to making more money is climbing as high as you can (becoming champion if that's possible) until the fights on your contract are up before forcing the UFC to offer you more because you're not obligated to fight anymore and they want to keep you.
Chris Weidman didn't renew his contract and ran up his last fight against Anderson Silva for sub-optimal money because he took a gamble, beat Silva, and negotiated a new contract that made a shit ton of money even after he lost the title.
Seems like Colby knows how beatable he is.
