It wasnt "the media" controlling the rankings. When you say "the media" it implies there were some outlets of note making these decisions..According to this Reddit post it was a bunch of outlets you've never heard of:
KHON Honolulu, MMA Oddsbreaker, CFMU 93.3, Bursprak.se, FightNews, Fight Network, Gazeta Esportiva, Cherokee Scout, Burbank Leader, MMA Weekly, KIOZ 105.3, Vladusport.com, Wrestling Observer, Top Turtle Podcast, MMA Fight Radio, BoxeoMundial, Kimura.se, MMA Soldier, MMA NYTT, Blood & Sweat, Inside Fighting Radio
Yeah, no wonder they've had issues. Also while the rankings have sucked for years, it's bizarre that it was Khalil not moving up from number 8 that provoked all of this. Number 8 is a perfectly reasonable placement for him.
Also a far bigger problem is the UFC instructing these no name guys to keep inactive fightersin the rankings despite years of inactivity. That is not decided by anyone in the media, that is a specific choice by the UFC to give preference to certain fighters. When it was Carla Esparza taking a year off to have a baby they had no issues removing her from the rankings very quickly. Because she wasn't a name they were interested in promoting. But Chandler or Stipe, good luck getting them out of the rankings.
