Dana "feels bad for" Holly Holm, criticizes Holm's manager following loss at UFC 196

"We had this meeting, and Holly wasn't even in it. Holly, that's your life. You should be in that meeting. Don't leave it to these people. Anyway, Holly made a lot of money. She accomplished great things, she beat Ronda Rousey. But it could have been so much bigger for her, and the sad part is, I don't think she even knows it."

Reply from Holm's manager:

"Of course, she knows," Fresquez said. "It was a team decision, and Holly is the boss. She wanted to fight, and she got her wish. I think she'll fight Miesha or Ronda next. That's my personal feeling, but who knows what the UFC has cooking? Holly was dominant in that fight against Miesha except for the second and fifth round. She paid for it. Hat's off to Miesha for capitalizing.

"What happens next is the UFC's decision. All I can speak to are Holly's wishes. Holly wants to fight Miesha right away. She wants to fight Ronda Rousey. The only mistake she made was her lack of preparation on the ground. She looked like a deer trapped in headlights. You could even see the look of total panic in the 2nd round. I don't think anyone can blame her for wanting to fight again instead of waiting for Ronda. She would have been benched for a whole year. Props to her for staying active. She'll be back.

I think that Dana - while he is ok with Holly herself (who wouldn't be?) - is pissed at Holly's team (manager and Jackson/Wink) for 1. sandbagging, 2. insisting on an early match rather than "waiting for Ronda" and 3. developing a defensive fight strategy that tends to produce boring fights (I think he has even called it "sport killing"). So she may have to wait quite a while before getting another shot at Ronda or Holly. It is too bad that a great person like Holly gets caught in the middle of this kind of political shit.

Is it really just, "the UFC's decision" - I feel like the UFC and Dana would be open to letting you have some kind of input in who you fight next, as long as the end goal is to make the biggest fight possible. The biggest fight that fans wanted to see.

Had Holly said "I want the Rousey fight, it will be huge" then they UFC would have been like ok, that makes sense.

So, isn't the whole "It's up the UFC who I fight next" mentality really just for lower fighters who have no real bargaining power?

Ronda is not due to comeback till November. Having Holly, and the rest of the division, wait a whole year for Ronda is stupid. What if Holly did wait but got injured in training?

I can't believe that Dana is bashing a champion for wanting to stay active. The UFC is full of champs that want to sit on their belts and fight as little as possible, and you're going to bash a fighter for wanting staying active when their the champ? Shame.

Dana isn't wrong but it's revisionist history and easy rhetoric from a desk jockey. Athletes compete and fighters fight, that's what they do. Can't expect a champion in her 30s to sit on the sidelines for 9-12 months.

Yeah it would have been the smart decision to wait and beat up Ronda again but props to Holm. That's normally the type of shit that Dana would frown upon an inactive champion. Sad thing is now she gets punished by Miesha/Ronda 3.

This talk is to soften the blow and take the ridiculousness out of giving a just crushed Ronda a title fight and not Holly a Tate rematch or Rousey fight. All the mainstream press after the fight was calling either for an immediate rematch or Holm-rousey two to hardcore and even casuals those make the most sense. He's trying to downgrade Holly but act like he cares and there's nothing he can do.

A Holm-Rousey rematch never losses it's luster or mainstream appeal but deep down he knows Ronda doesn't want that. I happen to click on Mike and Mike and they played the clip and after they both said Holm-RR is sltil a huge fight the biggest one they can make no matter when it happens. Which is trueDalna is acting like Holm losing a fight she was dominating completely ruins the fight and it doesn't make much sense while Rousey coming off getting crushed fighting a girl she beat twice makes all the sense in the world.
