We learned a lot about both fighters from this fight (or at least had it confirmed for us).
About Cris Cyborg:
-She hits really hard for a woman, even compared to other elite female fighters.
-She is not nearly as strong in the clinch as most assumed, as Holly controlled her with ease and dominated every exchange along the cage (although Cyborg did land some nice knees).
-She has 5 round cardio, albeit not at a super high output. So she is fit, but not a hyper cardio machine. She basically acted to slow the pace rather than try to push it.
-She is surprisingly patient. She did a good job of stalking Holm and countering that lunging left straight, instead of bumrushing the way some assumed she would.
-Her knees in the clinch are really good and her individual blows have massive power, but her combos did not look great.
-She was definitely the better fighter than Holm, but benefited heavily from the predictability of Holm's offense. Considering how many fighters have also figured out Holm at this point, and the fact that Holm is old and far from her peak as a fighter, there have got to be a few 135 lbers who are thinking Cyborg looks beatable.
About Holly Holm:
-ISH ISH!
-Holm is stupidly strong in the clinch. Apart from the knees, Cyborg never had her in any trouble, and in fact Holly womanhandled her with ease.
-Holm is still shit at leading. For reasons I don't pretend to understand, she threw first on Cyborg constantly and paid the price by getting countered all the time. I can only assume she was afraid of Cyborg walking in close on her, although considering how the clinching went, I am not sure why.
-Holm's striking is fucking basic. Almost every combo was a 2-1 left high kick to the head. Although it took Cyborg 3 rounds to really exploit this properly, Cyborg was able to avoid almost all danger because this same combo was all there was to Holm's offense for huge parts of the fight. Holm was able to have real success when she mixed up her strikes by going to the body and using oblique kicks, so it was frustrating to see her fail to use her full talents.
About WMMA at 145 lbs
It is still a dumpster fire of a division, but at least this fight may entice a few of the larger women at 135 lbs to take a run at Cyborg, who looked human for the first time in years.
