Documentary presented by Professor Simon Schaffer which charts the amazing and untold story of automata - extraordinary clockwork machines designed hundreds of years ago to mimic and recreate life.

The film brings the past to life in vivid detail as we see how and why these masterpieces were built. Travelling around Europe, Simon uncovers the history of these machines and shows us some of the most spectacular examples, from an entire working automaton city to a small boy who can be programmed to write and even a device that can play chess. All the machines Simon visits show a level of technical sophistication and ambition that still amazes today.

As well as the automata, Simon explains in great detail the world in which they were made - the hardship of the workers who built them, their role in global trade and the industrial revolution and the eccentric designers who dreamt them up. Finally, Simon reveals that these long-forgotten marriages of art and engineering are actually the ancestors of many of our most-loved modern technologies, from recorded music to the cinema and much of the digital world.

Cyberpunk takes it for me because it's done better in games and movies. You got movies like Total Recall, Blade Runner, Jonny Mnemonic and games like Deus Ex, Shadowrun and Flashback.

The only good Steampunk media I can think of is Bioshock and to a lesser extent Final Fantasy. I don't think I've ever seen a good Steampunk movie.

I am actually a bit supprised Hollywood has never tried to remakle Laputa/Castle in the SKy, compared to a lot of classic anime films it actually seems like it wouldn't be that difficult a task

Has anybody ever played steampunk inspired The Chaos Engine?

This comes to mind even moreso for me, a mix between Giger and Steampunk, especially the bosses...



I'd guess like a lot of brits growing up in the 80's the first feature length anime film I ever saw was Castle In the Sky/Laputa being shown on ITV, arguably the single most influential steampunk work for me. I am actually supprised that Hollywood has never tried to remake it as a live actuion film, compared to most anime classics the style and scope does actually seem well suited to it, you could argue I spose that the alien ships in iD4 were somewhat inspired by Laputa.

Steampunk is an alright aesthetic, but suffers from too many s in the scene wearing top hats, monocles and trenchcoats, thinking they're Billy Badass.

Another cool aesthetic is Dieselpunk. Based around technology that would have been around the 1930s - 1950s.
