So here is my plan. I'm doing a tournament 24 Apr. I plan to cut more weight than I need to a week early then adjust and maintain at my competition weight. Anyone done this? Stupid? Here is my logic below.

I'm walking around at 170-171, I'm competing at 165. The last tournament I competed in was at 160, the lowest I weighed in 20+ years. When I started dieting I was over 180. Anyway, After getting down to 160 (actually 158) I maintained 163-165 without even trying (until some douche at work started bringing in homemade salsa). So I figure I can cut to 160 or below and slowly work up to 165 over the following week and be strong and healthy.

A big reason for doing it this way is that the tournament is a 5 hour drive away. I don't want to be hungry for the drive. It would be nice to eat at least an apple or Clif Bar on the drive.

Does this seem logical? Stupid?

First and most important question, what type of weigh in. Hour before, right before you step on the mat etc

Night before.
You're over only 6 pounds for a night before weigh in. Be disciplined, eat healthy. Try to lose the last little bit as close to weigh ins as possible. You'll be fine and have plenty of time to recover. If you eat healthy and train hard. 6 pounds I'd not cutting weight. It's discipline and awareness of your body

Definitely don't try to "cut" a week early and then maintain. That's a bad idea.

Cutting is dehydrating yourself, essentially. Why would you want to be dehydrated any longer than necessary?

Also, for night before weigh in and only 6 lbs, you really have nothing to worry about. Just cut out carbs the last 5 days, and drink a low of water until the day before when you cut back, cut sodium back the day before, and don't drink anything day of. You can have light snacks throughout the day depending on your weight.

6 lbs for night before weigh in barely qualifies as a cut.

If I read your post correctly you actually mean dieting. If you instead mean cutting in its exact sense (i.e. dehydrating) don't even think about doing it a week before and staying the weight, unless you like multiple organ failure.

The reason I'm thinking about it a week early was because when I cut to 160 for a night before weigh in, I did everything I could to get my weight back up and it took over a month before I was over 165 again.

Of course I wouldn't stay dehydrated for an additional week. I'm just thinking I can drink and eat almost normally and still make 165 easy. It's just a thought. I'm doing some intense training Saturday that will kind of kick off my weight making adventure. I'll probably decide then. Damn I need to cut out beer, I had one last night.

It depends on what you mean by 'cutting'. Cutting water weight a week out is stupid. Very stupid. Genuinely getting your weight below where you need to be so you can eat a bit given the circumstances might be all right, it's really a personal choice, but keep in mind you'll probably give up 5-10 lbs to people who are actually cutting water. If you're fine with that, go ahead. It's tough when you have to travel and won't have the ability to cut at the venue.

'Cutting' in general refers to dropping water weight temporarily. Losing weight, as in actually losing fat to get your weight down, is totally different.
