These short notice replacements have been on a tear recently. Id be interested to know overall how well they do. Either way, to me, it seems like the training camps are too long man. How many times do dudes not even make it to the fight because they get injured? I think its because they push too hard for too long. I think guys peak in camp not on fight night. They peak in camp then kind of go off fumes until the fight week rest. I think their body is kind of shot.

If you had your feet in the Octagon like 4-6 months ago you dont need a full camp. Guys who have been fighting all their lives are not going to forget distance,timing...just how to fight in 4 months. Do a half camp to get you cardio on point and just do light drills to harness your timing, combinations and strategy

These long camps are too much IMO. There is a point of diminishing returns there.

Likely fighters would just train even harder with less rest leading to more injuries.

some guys get out of shape in between fights, so need longer camps. its really an individual choice, some need longer than others. there isnt a correct solution

I completely agree, but its about smart training more than the length of the camp

I think there's definitely something to it as fighters get older. In theory, it makes sense that younger fighters can train harder, their bodies can recover better/faster, and need to train longer and more often to continue to improve and reach their potential due to their relative lack of experience. Veterans in their 30s and older who have been fighting at this level for years have to consider the wear and tear already on their bodies and consider how much they're really going to get out of a few extra weeks going hard (and extra sessions per week).

Yes, less time to get injured plus more hype for a fight the sooner it is.

I agree camps should be shorter. Some guys just overtrain and some guys use the camp to get in shape. For example Rampage needed like a 10 week camp because he came in 50 pounds fat. But as long as you stay in good shape a 4-5 week might be better. Keeps you healthier..

Damn. He really balloons up in between fights.

When he was in Pride he didn't because they could call you for a fight at any time. However after he won the belt in the UFC he started blowing up. The best shape I saw him in was his first three fights in the UFC, but after he beat Hendo he started getting fat. Part of the reason he lost to Forrest was a layoff and coming into camp fat. He was reportedly around 250 when he hit camp for Rashad.

Yes you are 100% right TS. I been saying this for ages. I did research into it before, if you look at 2015 and 2016 the short notice fighters win more often than the long camp fighters. all these long camps just get you injured and beat down.

Damn. I understand being a fatass a couple of weeks after a fight but to go that far is pretty ridiculous. Haa

I dont mind long camps, but they need to lighten up and focus on cardio and super light sparring for the last 2-3 weeks.

6-8 weeks is ideal, usually. But Tarec admitting that he had a 16-week camp for the Story fight was mind-boggling

Oh absolutely. mma fans know all of the secrets to training, how hard to train and the length of camps.
If only trainers knew how to train fighters.
We know best. Mike bisping beat Rockhold and some other replacements won too.

Train to stay sharp and obviously diet but 10-12 week camps bringing in all these monsters in various disciplines. Not hard to see why so many guys pull out..

Maybe Jon Jones looked bad because he had a real camp for once instead of coming in and half assing it for weks on end like when he was doing coke.
