Was wondering how many people train BJJ and Judo together. My college has free Judo classes, so I think its silly not to take advantage of it. Also, any common mistakes BJJ guys make when they're new to Judo. I plan on taking it to have a takedown game but I want to show the art the respect it deserves also.

I know a few BJJ black and brown belts that ended up training a lot of Judo and they can't say enough about it.

In fact, my black belt affiliate is also a judo black belt and is very into throws for us. We do a lot of them. I simply can't see a studying judo too as a bad idea.

The one thing I've heard about BJJ guys doing judo...well, it's the same as when wrestlers take it. You get to focused on what you do well and let your ego take over. So instead of learning throws your shooting doubles (wrestler) or pulling guard for Newaza or something.

If you're going to bother doing it, learn the throws and try to stay away from too much newaza.

My old instructor was a black belt in Judo as well as BJJ...so we did Judo twice a week before Gi class. Currently we do ZERO Judo and I miss it. Which is lame because we have a Go-Dan instructor that teaches only kids...it's a waste of talent and years of knowledge.

I crosstrain both and at first when I felt threatened I would go for ankle picks or single legs which are now banned.. Another awkward rule is no armlocks unless you're black belt and the time allowed for groundwork throws me off. Otherwise it's a awesome sport/martial art.. I dunno which i would choose if i had to pick either bjj or judo.

word. I'm a wrestler who's a newb at judo, and I just focus on trying to perfect straight judo throws, rather than go for doubles and fireman's carries.

I said this in the judo rules thread but I guess I was jumping into a thread where I was in waaaay over my head, just like when I try to work straight judo on brown and black belts, lol. Even then, I resist the desire to wrestle when I'm there to learn judo.

Judo is good because it is the standup part of gi (or clothed) grappling that bjj is missing. But for mma, greco roman wrestling is much better, because it's the shirtless equivalent of Judo. Where in Judo, you can grab the gi, you need to use overhooks and underhooks in mma like in greco.

bjj is not missing anything in regards to the standing phase of grappling. each sport has different goals, but if you are taught by a solid bjj player then you should have some solid takedowns in your game.

If you can do both, they compliment each other well.

Freestyle is the shirtless equivalent of Judo, Greco has no leg attacks

Thats a legit "judo" throw., kata guruma. Focusing on that is not a bad thing, especially if you're already good at it. Just don't focus on exclusively that.

Judo AND BJJ?? nobody does that. this is just crazy talk.

Judo and BJJ makes you pretty slick. Add some Muay Thai or boxing you can be a cardio monster on the mat.:icon_chee

in judo do judo, in bjj do bjj. simple as tht.

I believe just this year the banned leg attacks so Greco is now the direct equivalent.

And if you just training judo to improve your BJJ i think you should at least train some wrestling because it teaches you to sprawl and be aware if someone does shoot. DC's book Gorilla Jiu-Jitsu has some really good stuff in there for forcing you oppenent into play a Judo style fight for takedowns.

Very wrong. Ashi wazas (leg techniques) are still permitted in judo and not in greco.

I'd like to cross train both at some point. Problem is the judo instructor comes in once in blue moon at my bjj school.

Some people don't like teaching adults the same way some people don't like teaching kids (me!).
