Creatine relieves joint pain????

no I am just a mess with which physicians don't understand ... :/

I saw a rheumatologist to rule out AS although I have heard you can still get diagnosed with AS even without a positive HLA-B27.

I have crazy degeneration in my c-spine, have 2 fusions (congenital at C2-3, anterior cervical discectomy w/ fusion at C5-6), suffering from a bad herniated disc at C6-7 and have what my physical therapist's exact words "a horrendous amount of osteophytes" (bone spurs) in my c-spine for someone my age (25). I also have constant left sacroiliac joint pain ... that started years before I've been having these c-spine issues... and I have read that patients with AS almost always present with SI pain first.

I am confused then, can you tell me what was the securing factor(s) for getting a diagnosis of AS for you? Are you on pain meds, or are you not in pain? PM if you want plz

edit: training is not even a glimpse in my eye anymore .. I had to withdraw from nursing school because I can't lift repeatedly at all anymore :(

spondylitis.org

There are quite a few users on there who were given the diagnosis without being HLA-B27+

I had symptoms when I was 20 and didn't have a full flare that laid me out for 2 weeks until I was 27.

I was given the diagnosis because of

SIJ inflammation/damage - Constant hip pain, either left or right
hla positive
Inflammation through the roof

You guys are kind of freaking me out....I am calling my doc to be checked. I have chronic inflammtion which seems to have gotten worse over the last several months and is really interfering with my life and mobility. I appreciate all the good advice here though!

I would be super stoked if it did. I also read a study that showed that creatine supplementation can interfere with myostatin production. For an understanding of what happens when animals produce too little or do not properly respond to myostatin, google Belgian Big Blue or Bully Whippet. Awesome.

I also want to go on record and say that Glucosamine and Chondroitin are snake oil. It's been reviewed in university-based double blind studies. It produces no significant reduction in joint pain due to osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, and does nothing to restore or repair hyaline cartilage. Waste of money. The wise gym goer knows that 99% of legal supplements are bullshit. The other 1% are creatine, beta alanine, quality multi-vitamins, fish oil, and anything that the FDA hasn't gotten around to banning yet.

Another note:

I don't know where this notion that cissus relieves joint pain an speeds recovery of muscular injury came from, but the only scientifically verified use for it is this: it speeds the healing of bone fractures in canines. If you have a broken bone, supp away, but if you have some back or knee soreness, look elsewhere.

Sources:

1. Reading things that weren't written by fitness gurus or supplement companies.

2. Personal experience.

I read up on cissis and it only talks about metabolism and weight loss, nothing about joint issues!

"inflammation through the roof" -- are you referring to your CRP level and if so what was it?

ugh.. don't want to believe it but it's definitely very believable..

I just don't understand how this information isn't more prevalent yet, all the physicians I asked about glucosamine pretty much said they're not sure go ahead and try it, lol.

Also, since the FDA doesn't regulate supplements, what's to stop certain companies from just putting a bunch of bullshit into their vitamins or supplements and say that there is a certain level of it in each capsule as well.

You are completely right on the FDA issues!

Yeah, the CRP level. Couldn't find my blood test from 2 years ago when I had my flare up, but it was not only out of the reference range, but abnormally out of the range.

Best quote from my doctor.. "You have no idea what normal feels like anymore do you?"

dang. all of you guys got me worried. I had a full flare at 16 years old in my knees and couldn't walk for 2-3 weeks (but the idiot doctor never diagnosed it). Currently I have severe low backpain I'm trying to get under control and I don't have health insurance. I'm not quite sure what all these terms you guys are using like hla positive and HLA-B27+ but I'm going to need to research. Sounds like you guys have it a bit worse so best of luck to ya boys!

Thanks! Good luck to you as well.

HLA-B27 is a gene present in most people with ankylosing spondilitis. I am HLA-B27 negative, myself. The gene itself doesn't do anything

Thanks for clearing that up, I've just visited the sites kickAS.org and spondylitis.org and have started finding some good info there, I'm not sure what my condition is but It's good to know there's other people out there trying to attain athletic goals with inflamation problems and diseases.

The hardest part about dealing with unknown chronic inflammation problems is the uncertainty of not knowing what you have, what's going to happen next, etc. Once you figure out what's wrong, you'll feel much better and more confident and comfortable about the future.

Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston has one of the best rheumatology centers in the country. If you have something wrong with you, they'll figure out what it is. I highly recommend it if you live close enough to get there.

I havent had health insurance for 14 years, I'm hoping I can get insurance again within the next 2 years. Till then I will be applying sherdog bro science towards my conditions.lol but actually there is so much great pro-health information on this board, it's a total god send for someone in my position.

I picked up some skeletal balm from need to build muscle.I have a messed up elbow and the balm has made it alot easier to deal with as it helps with the aches and pains.I only need to use a little bit so this bottle should last months.

never heard of the creatine thing.nice find.
