CPAC 2014 Minority outreach panel

It was also a generic insult used by older generations having nothing to do with race. Not saying that is how it was intended, but who knows.

Dude, you're defending Ted Nugent.

"In a 1977 High Times article, Nugent stated that he took crystal meth and defecated in his pants in order to avoid being drafted into the Vietnam War. [1] Nugent reaffirmed this in a 1990 interview with Detroit Free Press, stating that "...a week before his physical, he stopped using the bathroom altogether, virtually living inside his pants caked with excrement and urine." [2] In other interviews, Nugent has denied this claim, stating that he dodged the draft by enrolling at Oakland Community College to get a student deferment. However, his Selective Service classification record shows ratings of 1-Y and 4-F for 1969 and 1972 respectively, indicating ineligibility for military service under established physical, mental, or moral standards, rather than student deferment."

"In 1978, Nugent began a relationship with seventeen-year-old Hawaii native Pele Massa. Due to the age difference they could not marry so Nugent joined Massa's parents in signing documents to make himself her legal guardian, an arrangement that Spin magazine ranked in October 2000 as #63 on their list of the "100 Sleaziest Moments in Rock".

Keep money they earned? I hate how presidential elections have turned into which Santa will bring me more goodies.

Fox "news" makes money off viewership and sponsors. More viewers = more sponsors, which = more money to the network from the sponsors. They're aiming at the lowest common denominator and they're making money from the sheep.

I don't know Ted, but I do know how the media runs with these sorts of things and cause social rifts. It's that aspect that I am wary of. Potential distortions in the fabric of time and space, you know..

I can't watch at work at the moment. I'm assuming it's the clip of him calling Obama names including mongrel?

You sad previously how the media runs these sort of things and causes "social rifts." I posted the video so you could see Nugent making the comments to a news reporter, obviously with the intention of making the news.

Here is the actual full quote of what Nugent said.

Nobody is saying he wasn't being disrespectful or provocative. It seems pretty clear he was purposefully being disrespectful towards Obama.
It's the whole race angle that gets all of the dissecting though. Even a quick Google search on the first page results has articles comparing him to Nazi and how he called all black people names. It's that race angle that the media drools over.

But it's widely about perception, since we don't know true reality.

If the republicans keep trotting out people like Nugent on their campaigns then they'll have nobody but themselves to blame for pushing away minorities.

I wouldn't be surprised if they turn away some moderate republicans too or independents who don't like hate mongers being used as poster boys for the republican party.

Probably true, but it's hard to say how much is perception and how much is reality. That's how public opinion is shaped by third parties (typically media) is they control perception.

But that's politics. There is a reason politicians dodge questions and keep to a script.

I understand the media plays a lot in how people perceive things but in this case Nugent's words came straight from his own mouth in front of a camera. No media spin or bias just Nugent opening his mouth to spew his rhetoric.

Yeah no arguing that, but most people will be getting all the third party analysis which then becomes the context and that has a large effect on shaping people.

I don't think we are really disagreeing on anything :icon_chee

This X1000^

Do you know how many "Log Cabin" (Gay) Republicans showed up for CPAC 2014..?

ZERO

They decided to boycott because of non-inclusion. You can't just call people names, insult them continually, tell them that their lives are worth less than yours, and expect them to vote you into office. Whatever happened to inclusion?

That's such a dishonest and quite frankly childish way of viewing it. It's no wonder conservatives love that gif of Obama taking a toy away from a kid and sharing it with other kids (was it legos or something?).

To quote FDR:

“Taxes, after all, are dues that we pay for the privileges of membership in an organized society.”

Part of what constitutes living in an organized society is that we have a social safety net that provides those who are less fortunate an opportunity to improve their lives. It is not about personal gain but voting on politicians who will fight for a better system for everyone.

We all benefit from a stronger and bigger middle class, including the wealthy.

So you say you support a social safety net. What bothers you then?

Social safety nets are one thing. But voting for the politician who is going to increase your safety net the most, ie voting yourself money, rather than voting on what helps the country as a whole is what I have a problem with. But then again, the same thing that leads me to having a problem with that is the same thing that leads me to work as hard as necessary, learn as much as I can, sacrifice what I have to, plan for my future, take care of my family, and manage my money. These are also the things that put me in a position of not needing such assistance.

Again, I understand people hit hard times and I'm all for having safety nets. But the mindset that rejects the things I listed above while voting for the most benefits and entitlements you can get is just bad all around.

I will agree with the notion that the term racism is used too often and loosley...however being "race conscious" isn't negative...and calling something racist or identifying suble racism and coded language as being racist isn't negative or a bad thing either.

And nobody is arguing that we shouldn't call racism racism or point out when someone is being racist. I have done it myself many times. Thats not being "race conscious" thats simply recognizing racism when you see it.

What I mean by race conscious is always seeing people as certain races, seeing racism when its not there, reading into every situation looking for the racial angle, defining yourself by your race, trying to design policies to combat phantom racism, constantly speculating and accusing others of being racist, being concerned with what the next person feels about race, ect. When you're race conscious and dealing with a person or a group...that person or groups race is in the forefront of your mind. That is certainly a negative. I think we should strive to be colorblind which would require us to be racially unconscious. The more racially unconscious we are then the less racial conflict we'll have and the closer we'll be as a people.

I don't think you are going to find many conservatives interested in a "minority outreach". Most conservatives feel people should be treated as individuals and that skin color shouldn't be a factor. They also feel as tho they are not the racists people paint them as and therefore is no need to reach out.
100% complete BS. Before the Great Depression the Republican party had as big of a stranglehold on the black vote as the Democratic party today. The Great Depression made a majority of blacks lose faith the Republican party. Despite that the Republican party still got a very significant minority of the black vote. Eisenhower got 49% in 1956, in 1960 Nixon got 39%.

So what happened?

Barry Goldwater opposed the civil rights act when he ran for president in 1964

Republicans using the Southern Strategy to take advantage of white southerners anger over LBJ passing civil rights legislation to take the south away from the Democrats.

Decades cynically pandering to angry white male voters by appealing to their worst fears and insecurities

The Reagan Years

Presenting clowns like Herman Cain and Ben Carson and expecting them to be taken seriously

Being outperformed on the economy by a significant margin by the Democrats

Those are just a few examples

It's hard to get peoples vote when they think you suck on the economy and have spent decades using them to scare other groups into voting for you!!!!
