Could Yellowstone Park Volcano Go Sooner Then Anyone Planned?

I haven't watched either video, but what's unusual about this picture? You realize there are always hot spots there belching steam, right?

It seems like you might be thinking that these suddenly happened, signaling a build-up of pressure leading to a catastrophe soon.

But that would be dumb.

what you are saying is true but there has been unusual ground lift going on that concerns some geologists. It doesn't mean eruption is soon but scientists are monitoring it closely. The ground is rising over a large area which means more magma or more pressure.

But beginning in 2004, scientists saw the ground above the caldera rise upward at rates as high as 2.8 inches (7 centimeters) a year. (Related: "Yellowstone Is Rising on Swollen 'Supervolcano.'")

The rate slowed between 2007 and 2010 to a centimeter a year or less. Still, since the start of the swelling, ground levels over the volcano have been raised by as much as 10 inches (25 centimeters) in places.

"It's an extraordinary uplift, because it covers such a large area and the rates are so high," said the University of Utah's Bob Smith, a longtime expert in Yellowstone's volcanism.

Aside from the fact that there is a very high chance that I will never get to answer this question - the end of the world as we know it would probably a good start. If it helps you however its statistically much more likely that you get killed by lightning then that you will witness the eruption (violent or not) of a super volcano.

Not so sure bout that...

If it does go off there are many possible zones that can be affected due to wind and cycles. We presume the zone to be that large and in that vicinity but when she blows nobody knows. :icon_lol:

What happens to global warming if it blows? A cloud like that would make green peace look kind of foolish.

A full eruption will shroud the zone known as "earth" in darkness. Its that enormous of an eruption. Some people apparently think its a joke but the earth has about a dozen super-volcanoes that erupt periodically. Modern man hasn't seen that yet but we will eventually and when we do, it won't be like seeing Mt. Saint Helens on television.

I don't know if there are any math people in here but they say a full Yellowstone eruption would be equivalent to Mt. St. Helens X1000-2000 range. I can't even wrap my mind around that because wasn't St. Helens was like a small nuclear bomb going off, 1000 times St. Helens would be mind boggling in terms of energy release.

One of the main concerns would be that the bread basket of the U.S. which produces a massive amount of the world's food would be destroyed and that is just for starters, that's just the warm up. Even the super-volcanoes at the bottom of oceans would cause calamity when they erupt.

Like I said, modern man hasn't seen this yet, but it's going to happen sooner or later.

One of my preferred apocalyptic scenario's

I wonder if they eruption became imminent, if they could use nukes or something to drill a small pressure release vent.
I'd imagine a small continuous vent would be much less destructive than one big pop.

SHHHHHHHH be quiet there pacemakers are going off. Steady information not full adult level mature state info. :icon_lol:

I thought the same thing, why not drill some relief holes to vent the pressure but I guess its easier said than done. I've watched some videos and read some articles which apparently makes me an expert, but yea, vulcanologists say its not really a viable option with current knowledge and tech. I guess one of the dangers is that if you poke a hole in the wrong place the entire thing could release.

"A new report from South Africa claims..."

If you can't trust a Russian news source reporting a South African study, on an American volcano...who can you trust?!
