People keep talking as if Cormier got embarrassed. Cormier was tagging Jones when they were standing up and has the better hands. Jones looked very hittable. Cormier doesn't have to take Jones down and I don't know why he would want to. All he has to do is keep the fight standing and avoid the clinch.

I'm a Jones fan but his stand up/boxing will be his downfall if he doesn't work on it. Boxing should be priority number 1 in his camp. He doesn't have knockout power so he needs technique. I really don't know why he has't progressed in this area. If Jones goes to heavyweight that will be his Achilles heel. If he can't take a guy down and is forced to stand with some of those hard hitting heavyweights it will be lights out for him.

That's because Jones isn't tremendously skilled in in one art.that being saidFB_20160316_21_52_48_Saved_Picture.jpg

Jones' boxing is poor. This isn't news. He has a decent kicking game and some other variety in his strikes which makes his overall standup reasonable, and when coupled with his strong clinch and wrestling game, downright dangerous.

then how did JJ win?

(i like Cormier too, but it wasnt JJ or wrestling that won him that fight-although he looked better there, too)

Cormier HAD some success standup.

but he didnt win it at all.

.

this part of the post i strongly disagree with- it suggests Cormier will win it standing?

No. uppercuts/body work in the pocket/clinch was his best work in the last fight, and he needs to win the wrestling to win the next 1.

Winklejohn treats Holly as the wifey and Jones as the side bitch. Don't get me wrong, Jones as a side bitch gets mad attention from Winklejohn and is higher up than a jump off like Cerrone, but Jones can't move in on that wifey action to get mo Winklejohn time.

Like the Gus fight, Cormier's best success standing was with his dirty boxing. That was shut down by round 3.

Idk what you mean by making Jones striking look amateur, DC had the better boxing while Jones had the better kickboxing. Those hooks, knees, kicks, etc to the body had far more of a long term effect on DC compared to the punches he landed on Jones. Headhunting got him a single round while Jon's more diverse attack was a big reason for how the championship rounds played out in the champ's favor.

Dumb thread, if cormier made jones look amatuer in the stand up why couldnt he keep it up the whole fight then?. Jones doesnt have very good boxing but he has all kinds of kicks and elbows and not to mention that long ass reach. He can get away with average boxing becuase of how well rounded he is.

both of you are actually right. I apologize for my idiocy

So what you're saying is, is that DC lost in an MMA fight.

Personally I still think the key to the first fight was actually how improved Jones straight counter was. Yes his boxing still had weaknesses to it but I'v never seen his straight look that good before and I think it caught Cormier by surprise and forced him to push the pace hard that he couldn't maintain for 5 rounds.

Jones kicking can be impressive but really I don't think its THAT effective at keeping opponents at range, rather its the threat of the takedown/clinch that does that and Cormier is arguably the first guy he faced who didn't need to fear them. Stuff like those push kicks to the knee really isn't as effective when someone is looking to close in as the point of contact is very specific unlike way a good strong mid kick that can hurt someone at a lot of different ranges. The straight on the other hand was much more effective and I think whether Cormier can slip it better will be a key to the second fight.

Jones staggered DC multiple times with a cross lol

DC did land some good inside punches and uppercuts but he doesn't possess the serious power to hurt Jones.

Boxing isn't so cut and dry, there are dynamics to it.

You should be charged a 95% overall deduction from your like record for making this post

is someone on Sherdog admitting they are wrong?

i cant tell if this is sarcasm, i just know that this isnt the kinda place people admit an error in their wording.

if you are serious, i am impressed.

that won't work at heavyweight. He's not taking a Rothwell, JDS, Overeem, or Miocic down and keeping them there.
That's why he avoids heavyweight. Jones isn't as dumb as Connor. He knows where he belongs

That fight was a lot closer than people think but they were so drunk on Jon Jones they don't care to recognize that. Now making Jones striking look amateur ? Now your stretching it to far

Jones lost at HW?

Keep Conor's failure to himself. Conor hasn't even defended his belt. Jones isn't a small guy like Conor, he could actually fight at HW.

Silva is undfeated at 205 in the UFC and made Forest who was top 5 LHW at the time look like a amateur. Just because Conor lost going up doesn't mean the current best p4p fighter would.
