The guy was most likely being what he thought to be ironic and self-deprecating. I have no doubt that he earnestly thinks that there is not systemic racism in law enforcement and that the disparate experience of minorities is just because they're more naturally violent and whiny and liberal media and Obama and so on and so on.

We can't expect cops to be social theorists. In reality, they are uneducated dudes who cared more about getting an easy job with authority than striving to learn or be great. They are what they are, but I do not believe that most purposefully inject racial prejudice into their workdays. They're just ignorant to the demographic racism built into (urban) policing.

Gonna disagree on that. As a Police Officer you do have to conduct yourself in a certain way. Joking about murder within the department to a civilian, regardless of the intent, is about as unprofessional as it gets.

Yes, he certainly did. But this also shouldn't be treated as some punctuation on the topic. It's a dumb pig being dumb. It is not a meaningful, and certainly not a comprehensive, representation of the racial problem in policing. And I do not personally think this guy should be vilified or raked over the coals, as his conduct is certainly no worse than what I would expect out of the average LEO: heck, I would wager from my experiences that the average LEO says way more unacceptable things than that in civil contexts.

At least you get the respect due of having not defended this guy or his sentiments.

I'd give him a pass with that joke, the far left probably wouldn't as South Africa and their history of Apartheid would taint the story. If you found a place where there was no history of white colonization than it could possibly work.

Guy has a 28 year career with the department. Seems like a pretty good track record with no complaints on it. He has a pretty calm, reasoned air about him. A person that doesn't lose his cool easily. He's relaxed in a tense situation. This is the kind of guy you want on the force.
