I am usually the first to defend cops, as you all know. but in this case, i don't see a way to take his side

What an absolute sack of dog shit this cop is. His "I dont give a fuck" attitude makes it even worse, especially after he just drops the kid on his face. I really hope this guy gets raped repeatedly in prison. the only surpise in this case was that the cop actually got SOME sort of punishment, although much, much too light of a sentence.

Youtube description of video:

Dashcam video released on Monday shows a new view of the moment an Independence police officer used a taser on a teenager. Timothy Runnels was sentenced to four years behind bars for the 2014 tasing arrest that put teenager Bryce Masters in a coma. As part of his guilty plea, Runnels admitted that he violated the teenager's civil rights during the arrest by intentionally dropping him face first on the ground while Masters posed no threat. According to court documents, Runnels also admitted to injuring the teenager.

Court filings also say the government proved that Runnels deployed his taser, hitting Masters in the chest and allowing the current to run for about 20 seconds, which is four-times longer than officers are trained to have their tasers deployed. Masters suffered cardiac arrest, but survived due to medical treatment given at the scene and at a hospital. Runnels is ordered to begin his sentence at the start of August, and will be on supervised release for two years after he gets out of a federal prison. The Masters family gave this statement following the release of Runnels' sentence:

"While we are pleased that Mr. Runnels was held accountable for his actions, no one really wins in this scenario. Two law enforcement families were devastated by these events and we all simply wish that day had never happened."

It says two LEO families were hurt, that means the kid was probably the son of a cop.

All mr popo had to do was not dropp the guy on his face - or at least dragged the guy a bit further out of camera view before dropping him .

I'm wondering when people will start interfering when these scenarios go down.

or not tazing him for half a minute. or not trying to drag some kid out of his card for being a bit mouthy.

That would only escalate the situation further. You'd be better served as acting as a witness for the unconscious kid.

Spoiled little brat couldn't just get out of the car, could he? Cop went OTT though.

It would, and an escalation in this case would have been dutiful from a bystander. Historically there's a threshold for that kind of violence to be tolerated.

He should have followed the lead of the big city cops and avoided any proactive policing.

I think that was an editorial omission .

I think it meant to read two families .

Why didn't he just taze them---oh, wait...
Why didn't he just shoot them in the leg?

Then there would be 2 unconscious people on the pavement. How does that help the situation?

or, you could do the intelligent thing, act as a witness for the kid or take it directly to the police yourself. Jumping in trying to play superhero would would not end well.

Scrawny white kid on the burbs? what possible threat can he pose that requires proactive use of force?

None of that violated policy though . He got in trouble not for tasing him but for dropping the boy on his face when his hands were cuffed behind his back so that he could not break his own fall . Even though the tasing caused the boys brain damage the cop was well within his right to do so . Think thats why his sentence is only 4 years despite maiming the kid for life .

The young man didn't do anything.
According to his parents, he's a good boy.
Gotta love these young, " didn't do anythings."

Well, he did tell that kid he was under arrest. At that point, he was resisting, and use of the tazer was fine. I guess the problem is he continued to taze him for a long time after the guy was already on the ground.

If I'm not mistaken, the OP said he tazed the kids 4 times longer than is considered acceptable.

well, if the story is to be believed, he was pulled over because the cop THOUGHT he had stolen plates when in facthe didn't. if that's the case, kind of hard to rip on the kid
