Coolest moment from Pride buyout.

They supposedly intended to run the organization separately, but we're unable to secure a new TV deal in Japan. They claimed that it was so tainted by the yakuza involvement, that no one would touch it, so they just dissolved it and merged the remaining roster with the UFC roster. Seemed like they didn't all that hard though.
Not only did they claim they were not able to secure a TV deal, but I also recall them saying the fighter contracts weren't what they thought and that created some issues with signing fighters.

Fuck, that would've been so cool. Imagine a yearly MMA superbowl type event where all of the Pride Champs fight the UFC Champs, alternating between Pride and UFC rules each year.

There was nothing cool about another premier MMA promotion dying. UFC shills, brand loyalty, tribalism whatever you wanna call it, are the most pathetic and cringey group.
No what was cool is that there were fights that fans wanted to happen that were not happening. So the fact that Wand and Chuck were in the same promotion and the fight was going to happen was great. They tried to make it work before twice when they were in different orgs and it fell through. That was when they were both in their prime too. It was not great that Pride ultimately failed because thats what happened. They did great things but all the stuff going on behind the scenes was not sustainable. So if you want to get in your feelings and make it into someone is cheering the failing of another org thats on you braddah because thats not at all whats happening.

One of crappiest thing was seeing Henderson come in with two Pride titles and losing them both.

Was sad they were not able to do more. Still would like to see them pay homage to Pride by doing an event with Pride mat and logos in the cage. Still burns that Sakuraba and Fedor never came over.

At least Saku was there before. And He got inducted into the HOF (which I attended!)

Fedor has gotten 0 love.

Dan really didn't deserve the WW belt in the first place be fair. Shoulda lost it in the GP.

Yea. Was great zuffa showed him respect. Wish some of the new fans would educate themselves and watch some of his old scraps

Surely Saku was already in Heroes by the time Pride was sold?

yes, he fought Smirnovas in 06 and then Akiyama at Dynamite that year.

Pride was sold in March of 07. Last event was April (same night as GSP vs Serra)

I hear ya. Just really felt like that was one of the last remnants of Pride. Was really cool watching him walk out with the titles

The whole "Fedor never fought in the UFC" sentiment is way overblown, in my opinion. Fedor spend his best years in Pride, which had a much better HW roster than the UFC. Then he spent his declining years in Strikeforce, which arguably had a better (or at least comparable) HW roster than the UFC. All the while, he had 7 wins against former or future UFC HW champions while they were still relevant. Aside from the novelty of seeing him inside an octagon, I don't actually think we missed anything. I guess it would have been fun seeing him fight Randy; but I also think he would have walked through Randy at the time, so it doesn't feel like a great loss to me.

Why wasn’t Minowaman allowed to fight the GOAT Timmeh ?!

2006 Sakuraba would’ve been destroyed….why would you want to see that ?

It’s all speculation but I tend to think they probably tried pretty hard. They spent a lot of money acquiring the brand and I tend to think no matter how much Dana may have been into burying his competition it doesn’t make much sense from a business standpoint to spend that kind of money for a fraction of the expected return.

Although I will say I think acquiring the Pride library has paid off in the long run.

Was cool that this moment was actually on camera. I know how much fans were looking forward to the Chuck and Wand fight actually being able to happen.

God, I miss that fuckin organization.
What a shame that it has come to this sir.

I think there were fights that would have made sense. I dont think you put him against top 5 guys but there were fights that would have been fun.

Yea, There were still some fights that could have been there for him. The Fedor thing was a screwup. Could have been some of the biggest fights of that time. Probably would have earned Dana some much need respect amongst the fans at the time. Instead of waiting till he was in Strike Force to basically say yea he was never that good.

It's still unclear who screwed up the Fedor deal actually. I like Fedor and I don't like Dana, but Fedor's management was really scummy. Vadim Finkelstein was really shady, and Matvienko (the son of a big Russian politician, a junkie, and overall a fine fella) was epitome of corrupt businessman. Pretty sure they ripped Fedor off hard too.
It's possible they demanded crazy money and concessions from the UFC, since at that time Fedor was basically their last cash cow and they were not letting him go.

Yea Vadim def has a history. I also know they used Fedor most his career at that time. Which was unfortunate just because of the type of person he seemed to be. Just super humble.

Yea they basically bought the logo and the rights to the catalogue I dont believe any of the fighters contracts were involved. I know Enson has talked about it in the past and the situation with the Yakuza involvement in the deal.
Dang I’d love to just sit down have a beer and pick your brain.
