Gerstmann seems pretty sold on the raytracing in this game. Maybe I'll replay through it with the DLC after I upgrade in like a year or so. I'll think of it as a treat for finishing grad school.
As to the game itself I like it quite a bit. I think it handles the best of their 3 most recent games, but the story falls short of Alan Wake's. The writing and world building are good and the acting is pretty good (some of the faces do give me an uncanny valley reaction), but the pacing is a little weak and the plot and characters don't really develop in an interesting way in relation to the premise. There are weird, supernatural phenomena that go on, but they don't really get explored in interesting ways beyond warped geography/objects and the powers of your character.
There are some cute, funny, and strange moments that take advantage of the Twilight-Zone-style setting, but there's nothing very substantial that makes it stand out to me as a memorable sci-fi story. It's missing thematic depth and also doesn't have the personality of Alan Wake (which didn't have thematic depth either but it had better characters, and the occasional eye-popping moment like the concert stage battle--that did fit the theme very well in a really fun way).
I recommend it though. It's a riot to play. Tearing up the environment and using it blast enemies hasn't felt as good to me in a while. I'm glad there are still developers making story-based shooters/action games.
