Holly had me from hello with that ass, conor not so much. Before UFC 196 I must say that I was rooting for nate diaz all the way. I was neutral on the Holm vs Tate fight as I am a fan of both.
The reason I have a newfound respect for Conor is because he took a fight with an opponent on about 10 days notice at a weight class two notches above his own ala bj penn style.
Conor is not a dumb guy. I would say hes probably highly intelligent as he has made himself millions in a short amount of time as a mma fighter. He knew the risk he was taking fighting a guy like nate diaz, who has much more experience and had nothing to lose. But he fought diaz anyway. So how can I not respect the guy as a longtime fight fan?
Now onto Holm. She could have taken the easy way out. She could have waited for the ronda rematch. But she didnt. She immediately took a fight with the next best contender, meisha tate. So, again as a longtime fight fan I have to respect that.
Did Holm and Mcgregor make the smartest moves by choosing to fight at 196? Maybe not but who am I to question that. Both fighters could have taken the easy road and sat out promoting the shit out of their next fight and no one would have blamed them. But they didnt, both of them took risks, which is exactly what got them both where they are today. Both ended up losing but I def respect both a lot more for taking the fights that they took with the risks and other factors involved.
