Is it possible to compete in grappling/jiu jitsu matches without a school? Im 16 and have been wrestling my entire life and been rolling with jiu jitsu guys for a couple years now but i dont want to spend money on a $300 membership to a jiu jitsu school. i would like to just compete .

$300 Jesus fuck.
went into a school in the area. and I tapped one of his blue belts with my wrestling top game and submitted him with a heel hook (we had agreed that since we weren't wearing gis heel hooks were allowed). the guy basically told me it'd never work against any good grappler so I decided not to train there because of thats major disrespect to his student. the other "local" school I went to was about $275 a month and $350 for a school gi.

350 for a gi....lol

Also what kind of moron will do heelhhook at blue belt level?

Out of curiosity, what kind of competition are you planning to enter because they are not cheap?

16 years old doing heelhhook. Lol

Yes heel hooks are only for 67 year old coral belts.

And holy shit at $300 a month and a $350 “school GI”.

Talk about bullshido....

Bjj Globetrotters is your friend. Give it a google.

Did you possibly do the heelhook by basically grabbing the heel and reefing at it? I know that is how I was taught heel hooks in Sambo and from old mma tapes.
The leg lock game employed by a lot of people who dabble in sub grappling isn't usually the most technical.

You may have been grappling with a recreational blue who was trying to tell you that you were attacking the heel in a way that won't work against a leg locker.
The game has changed and is very technical and you can't really get away with that anymore.

The schools in your area are ridiculous.I reckon you could train at Renzos for that price in NYC. You would be better off doing that once a week and continuing your wrestling.

thanks bro appreciate it. but the heel was in the pit of my elbow and his foot was against my ribs. not sure if thats the correct form

Heel hooks have changed. They are a lot more technical and subtle than how I was first taught. It used to be just grip and rip.
These days it's slow and controlled in comparison and once you are locked in you know you are done. It is also much safer for your training partner.

What you might find is the blue belt was "politely" telling you that you do a heel hook that way with the wrong person and they will take your knee home with them.
I recently told this to a guy I was training with also. I didn't tap from the heel hook, but I "politely "told him that he should consider his training partners and apply it in a way that let us both enjoy the training. At least you spoke about it before the roll, I was wearing a whitebelt rash guard and our school sticks to straight leg locks unless agreed upon before. The same guy was throwing fake strikes at me the whole time and giving me his back because of it.

My recommendation is go to the more reasonable priced school and work on your bottom game. Lose the ego and work on your Basic BJJ game. give it 3 months and if you don't like it just use your wrestling to compete and join BJJ globetrotters. Go to a few camps and get promoted through them.

im confused. why is it ridiculous to use heel hooks at 16?

What did you end up doing?
Did you buy a cheap gi online and go to a school? Or are you just competing as is ?
I am generally interested if you aren't a troll.

same here! I very much want to know how this turned out

Also curious to see how this went. In my area, most tournaments require some kind of school affiliation to sign up. Were you able to enter a comp?

Ahhhh.....to be 16 again and rack up gym wins.....
