How big is CM Punk?

For someone who didn't grow up in the US, like myself, CM Punk is just a shitty fighter in the roster.
The overseas UFC crowd know him as a former pro wrestler, but without context, we have no idea of how famous this guys is. We have absolutely no desire in watching him fight. Especially after the first debacle.

So, American fans, are you really all that interested in watching CM Punk have another go?
Is it worth it for the UFC to spend all this money to promote and pay for a guy who's basically an amateur fighter?

CM Punk was one of the most notable pro wrestling stars this decade. He had a lengthy reign as WWE Champion and before that was a major indy wrestling star in the U.S. He had a significant following in the U.S. and up to 4-5 million people watched him every week on WWE Monday Night Raw when he was champion. That is the reason why the UFC brought him in and paid him so much, it gave them more exposure and attracted new fans to the product.

I'd most definitely watch him fight again. There's a definite lack of top quality comedy shows on TV and this would be up there with the funniest.

He added like 300-500k buys alone. So yes he is worth it.

The overseas UFC crowd?

I'm interested in a morbid kind of way. Like wanting to see just how terrible he really is. He's already 0-1, and literally managed to get off ONE missed punch, before getting his shit pushed in.

Can he possibly look worse? Stay tuned!

If the UFC is willing to let someone fight for their promotion then the juice is worth the squeeze for them. It's their company and they can and should do what they want with it.

I personally love the fact that Punk is allowed to attempt this with his life as it not only shows us how amazing the rest of the professional fighters are in comparison but we also get to see any type of improvements he can make. It shows us just how difficult something like this is to attempt with little training and what certain people in this situation are made of to keep trying.

It will help in ratings for whatever card he's on as well and that's the main reason he is afforded these opportunities but i don't think that should be the reason someone is given a chance to fight but unfortunately this isn't ran like a sport when it god damn well should be.

I wanna see you against Micky Gall. Then I'll let you know how it went (you won't be conscious, so you will need me to tell you about it).

Only grown men who drag their kids to WWE events as an excuse to attend themselves give a damn about CM Punk. The rest of us, the majority, consider it an embarrassment to the sport.

If the longevity of a sport depends on bringing in unqualified celebrities from other fields to bolster ratings, trouble is brewing.

Imagine the NBA or MBL drafting a WWE wrestler - just because he could put asses in seats.

The UFC can't build the sport through gimmicks. Letting CM Punk fight again, hell letting Brock fight again are big mistakes. They are replicating Boxing mistakes. Focusing only on big fights, rather than training fans to enjoy and appreciate the evolution of a fighter is major miscalculation. And after TUF, you would think they would understand that's where the bread, butter and money is at. Just because that show sucks doesn't mean people don't need to understand fighters more to build brand loyalty.

As a side note:
In general, I expect that younger generations will be less and less interested in sports, as they are gravitating towards spending their life online. They stupid enough to think people that talk with on the internet are their real friends. They can't go more than 10 min without looking at their phones. They prefer to play sports video game over playing an actual sport outside.

This will have a gradual impact on attendance at events. And the smaller sports, like MMA, will have the toughest transition.

In the meantime, it's worth nothing that during Saturday's fights there are thousands of people, just like me, that were playing UFC 2 or UFC 3 rather than watching an actual fight. I only tuned in to 3 fights. One, the sport is getting a little stale with the point fighting. And secondly, they are doing a piss poor job of introducing and building new fighter awareness. And finally, breaking up shows along different TV, Cable and Streaming networks makes it exceedingly annoying to figure where a fight can be viewed, whether it's covered by what I currently pay for or whether I have to pony up for the night. I've been watching MMA for a very long time and it's never been more confusing and expensive to enjoy it. Says volumes that I'm basically giving up on something that has been such a major part of my sports fan experience.

Of course the UFC has determined that CM Punk makes them decent money. This has been confirmed by his debut. As ridiculous a fighting spectacle as it turned out to be, the fight attracted a lot of viewers. I think he will be a big attraction one more time. People will be curious to see how he does next. Will he show some improvement? Will it be another farce? How the hell will the next CM Punk fight play out? I guess you don't have a sense of CM Punk's value in the US...he was a modern-day folk hero, a pro wrestling pioneer, at one time the most popular man in the WWE. And the UFC relies some on WWE crossover fans. Remember, it's only ONE fight. There will be many fights on the card. The UFC wants to draw as much of the demographic in as it can besides the hardcore MMA fans...WWE fans, WMMA fans, and fans from around the world, for example.

CM PUNK SHOULD BE THE ONLY FIGHTER ALLOWED TO BE ON THE JUICE

Yes. He represents the common man as he isn't that big. He went toward his opponent so he wasn't scared. He took a decent amount of GNP without tapping so he has some toughness. He wants a second fight so he is hungry.

CM Punk will win his next fight by dishing out a thriller of a whooping and telling Michael Jackson to beat it.

Bet the house on it.

I didn't grow up in the us either and i know who the fuck CM Punk is. And fuck yes it's interesting because it's like seeing an average guy competing in the UFC. He's been training for a few years now so it will be interesting to see his progress. We all know he isn't champion, contender or even gatekeeper level BUT it's still interesting.

Everybody wants to watch him fight, and more importantly listen to what he says afterwards. He's the embodiment of all of us chumps that could never even dream about being a pro fighter. But we're not jealous, salty bitches envious of a man who's earned his shot as a big named celebrity. We're Americans and proud to live in a country where an honest man can get a chance in life, and a shot at stardom. We're all proud of Punk...
