Surely you don't want peoples views of sherdog if, many fighters think it does.

For starters it all depends on your strenght levels and how well you can actually perform a clap pushup.

Also I think it`s actually better to do explosive pushups where you try to push yourself off the floor as high as possible and rebound as quickly as possible. This way you concentrate exclusively on speed of movement rather than on clapping.

At any rate I`ve done these for a period of time and I didn`t see a big difference. Something I found very effective on the other hand are one handed medicine ball throws. I think the reason is that the movement you use resembles punching much more closely than push-ups.

i'm also a bigger fan of medicine ball work for things like this, you'll involved your upper body movement a lot more that way

I use the suicide pushup method of exploding off the ground and clapping your hands behind your head, practice a couple times because if you commit early your gonna eat the floor.

I would agree with this. I am not really a fighter, so I can't vouch for it in terms of performance.

Definitely can't hurt.

I disgree with this though... the amount of pressure & impact on the hands/wrists can really hurt. IMO, they aren't worth the risk - but I am old and I damage easily.

seriously people now a days think you can hurt yourself doing anything. I had someone tell me that jumping jacks shouldnt be done because you can hurt your shoulders.

Seriously the younger generations are absolute pussies.

I agree, they aren't worth the risk. I don't disagree that they can't be done properly, but I wouldn't bother. I really don't think you will see any improvement.

Clap pushups are a type of plyometric exercise. While you probably won't see much difference in your punches from doing them by themselves, incorporating more plyometrics into your workout routine will help you to be more explosive and powerful.

You want to know how to get more power on your punches? Work out your legs and core. Plyometrics for your core and legs is the best thing you can do.

As someone who is currently experiencing lingering sharp pain in my wrist due to repeated impact, I am speaking from experience. Hell, regular push ups give me some serious pain right now. I have to do them on my knuckles.

What are some plyometric exercises for the core?

The only reason you clap is that it forces you to explode off the ground, otherwise you won't be able to fit in the clap. It's like following through your swing in baseball, obviously it doesn't matter what the bat does after the ball is hit, it's just to keep your habits good.

If your wrists are hurting from the clap pushups, I'd just stop doing the actual clap part so your wrist isn't trying to get into position and then straining itself at the last second.

I do these, I read it in Bruce Lee's 'The Tao of Jeet Kune Do'. He was a big believer in explosive power training. He says these clap push ups and shadow boxing with light weights. I've never done research on it, but I figure he knew what he was talking about.
