I Agree that The 5th should go to gane as hugging shouldn't award point and it's not like frank took him down if i remember correctly gane took him down and francis hit a sweept (could be mis remembering) but after that sweep francis held on for deer life.

There was no sweep, Gane had top control and he abandoned it on his own accord and went for a stupid leg lock. If he wouldn't have went for the leg lock and stayed were he was he would have won the fight.

Francis Nnganou is a damn legend and he is our lineal champ whether you like it or not. If Ciryl Gane defended those takedowns he would be champ idiot.

A legend? Hoping that's sarcasm. They guy is beast... but his title reign is 1 fight and now bouncing. That puts him Tim Sylvia territory in the history books. I like Franky, but his resume is filled with big names all past their prime. He has a long way to go to prove he is a legend.

The scoring has to be more clear.

Francis did zero ground and pound, advancing or submission attempts. Nothing but takedowns and holding. Got clearly out struck.

Okay if that's the criteria.

But other times we see takedowns get no points whatsoever.

Gane isn't the real anything. Not even the real #1 contender. Neither is Jones though.

I thought Ngannou won. In a real fight if you are controlling the opponent by laying on top of them, you are winning the fight. But it was a close fight and Gane was greener than Ngannou, so I don't think there is a legitimacy problem. It's not like Ngannou smashed Gane in round 1 or 2 and Gane then captured a vacant title. Ngannou never avenged his close loss to Lewis, no one cares.

We also don't know how serious Ngannou's injury was. Was it a 99% Ngannou? A 70% Ngannou? I assume that if he was really worried about the injury, he would have postponed the fight.

While you could argue Gane won that fight, Gane was expected to easily win a decision and Francis was hurt. Even if Gane won it doesn't really change that the fight made Ngannou look better and Gane look worse. This is why there is so little outcry about the fights outcome. Also only 1 member of the MMA media gave the fight to Gane and 6 gave it to Francis 4-1 instead of 3-2. I would say it was closer to a Gane win than a Francis 4-1 but the point was this wasn't a robbery. There's an argument to give Gane 3 rounds but most people didn't.

Gane was the interim champ before that fight and he's certainly capable of beating Francis. But he didn't. Even if he's the better fighter(likely) the best fighter doesn't always win.

Gane being the rightful champ would fix our OCD problem about the lineage and I get that. Lineages break though, champs retire, get stripped etc and while they often come back(especially in boxing) making the issue moot theres always a possibility they don't.

Gane should've won the fight but it was close. Just another case of clown judges putting too much emphasis on takedowns and control over damage.
