Chinese Culture

Do any of you know about Chinese culture? What it's like to grow up there, the social classes, norms, social views, etc?

I've matched with a few Chinese girls on dating apps and they always seem a bit different. Like reserved. No fun, all business. But they also seem to have a simple outlook on some things, like what it means to be happy.

Also, all of them seemed to have these repressed frustrations about things.

I don't know shit.

thousands of years of glorious culture, destroyed by communism and now subjected to being the worlds factory

Damn, man. I'm just a white dude from the east coast USA, but that shit made me have feels.
It's sad because it seems true.

But hey, at least they're not North Korea!

I know quite a bit about Hong Kong culture. I have relatives there, and have been there a handful of times before the handover, and still in Brit sphere.

I will say it is all about tactlessly climbing the social ladder. Basically you will step over and trample anyone you can to get to the top of the social hierarchy. And the social hierarchy, and economic one go hand in hand. If you think about it, its a small very very dense city. There is no other way for you to succeed.

Other places even USA has tactless social climbing, but we here have greater choices. I have met HK people here in US who felt slighted in the utmost way when I did not completely ditch my current friends and pay them more attention. Like they are really that good at first impressions.

"I don't know shit." That's the base from where you should venture forth, and please dispose of all the thoughts in your post that came before that. No fun? You truly don't know shit, except for the fact that you suspect that you don't know shit.

First, the Chinese girls who grow up in Western culture will be more similar to you than to Chinese girls who grow up in China. Keeping that in mind, don't overthink things. You could see them as a more conservative, traditional version of girls in your culture....you really don't have to go beyond that. If possible, if you for example go out with Jane the Chinese girl, try to see her as just Jane, not as Jane the Chinese. Then if you establish a basic camaraderie you can start asking her stuff about her culture. She will be happy to educate you.

Please do not assume if you guys don't hit it off that it's because she's Chinese; it will likely be because your individual personalities are not a good fit.

(My "credentials" - My best friend of 30 years is Chinese; I lived in China for a year.)

I work with a fair number of Chinese people, they’re just like everyone else, individuals.

China is known for having a more collectivist culture though, or at least relative to somewhere like the US.

I have been staying in China for almost three years now and my wife is Chinese from the countryside. Currently working on getting the paperwork Done to stay here long term, I would prefer to raise my son here than in the USA (Colorado native). Come at me bros!
