China sends carrier through Taiwan Strait

TAIPEI - China has sent its sole operational aircraft carrier the Liaoning through the narrow Taiwan Strait that separates China from the self-ruled island, Taiwan's defense minister said on Wednesday, according to local media.

The move comes on the heels of a warning from Chinese President Xi Jinping that Taiwan would face the "punishment of history" for any attempt at separatism. China claims Taiwan as its sacred territory and considers it a wayward province.

Speaking at Taiwan's parliament, Defence Minister Yen Teh-fa said the Liaoning entered the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday, according to Taiwan's Central News Agency.

The ministry is keeping a close watch on its progress, the report cited Yen as saying.

China's could respond to a law that encourages relations between the US and Taiwan with "military pressure", the country's state-run media said on Sunday.

On Friday President Donald Trump signed the Taiwan Travel Act, which went into effect the following day, encouraging visits between the United States and Taiwan at all levels. The US ended diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1979 but continues to have a "robust unofficial relationship" with the self-ruled, democratic island, that Beijing considers a province of China.

"China will and should take timely countermeasures against the US and all "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces through diplomatic and military means if US legislation that encourages high-level contact between the US and the island of Taiwan is implemented," China's English language Global Times reported.

The paper, an offshoot of the People's Daily, cited a former major general in the Chinese army and Liu Weidong, an expert in US relations at a government-run research institute. And given the publication's close links to Beijing, the views likely align with those in power.

The Chinese embassy in Washington initially responded on Friday saying the law "severely violates" the "political foundation of the China-U.S. relationship" and its "one-China" approach to Taiwan.

In 2005, China created an anti-secession law that allows the country to use "non-peaceful means" to prevent Taiwan establishing independence.

"If any 'Taiwan independence' secessionist forces perceive the US bill as a 'pro-independence' signal, the Chinese army will resume its military probes circling the island and send more military vessels and airplanes to patrol the Straits," Global Times quoted Liu as saying.

China regularly carries out military drills near Taiwan, which has been a cause for concern internationally. Last year, China conducted 16 drills near Taiwan and a report from the island's defense department said China's "military threat towards us grows daily."

China may also take diplomatic action against the US, Global Times said, including stopping high-ranking official visits to Washington for a set time.

High-level diplomatic relations between the two countries appear to be getting more strained by the day.

I think the Communist Chinese are way over their heads in this issue, Trump will call their bluff the Chinese have the momentum on their side but this is stupid if they really think they can threaten the USA its premature so to speak any stupid move by them right will just put that momentum to a halt they are not yet a super power, maybe its time to put the "Fear of God" to these communists.

They better really do nothing.

Even so if they are just trying to gauge reactions, I just think this is counter productive on their part this just reinforces that they too are war mongering freaks and since they won't do shit it will make them incompetent and lose potential allies more.

Further more these press release by them can be taken as a reason for other countries to step up their defense against China those countries like Vietnam,Japan and even Indonesia. It will make it much easier for the leaders of the aforementioned nations to convince their people to invest more in the defense sector and to forge more ties with western allies.

This all or nothing style of Chinese diplomacy is stupid and alarming imagine what they can do once they are at parity with the USA.

I don't understand that region well enough to make an informed observation, but it does seem like a case like Russia taking their slice of Ukraine

The world will be outraged. Stomp their feet. Condemn the action. Impose sanctions- but no one will lift a finger to actually physically step in and China will get Taiwan back under their umbrella without anything more than a potential for some very slight guerilla resistance from Taiwanese who don't want to be back

Economically sure, but militarily might be a while. Their equipment is steadily getting better but the simple volume of what the US has alone is enough to ensure that nobody takes a shot at us in a conventional war. Even for China it would be suicide, they'd get some good punches in here and there but they wouldn't be able to go the distance as the US would end up dominating the Air and Sea, making China's advantage in ground troops worthless.

Oh, they are focusing on it, but they are much more quiet about it. They have to be, as a show of force in any threatening capacity would be countered by a US show of force which would be embarrassing for them especially since their lone aircraft carrier (for now) is a second hand Russian carrier.

As for when to deal with them if they are to be a threat, as I stated they are playing a long game of catch up to the US. The tech is coming along, but it may be several decades before they could pass the US considering how far ahead the US is combined with the budget to only get better. But the sheer size is the problem, the US has (I think) a dozen carriers in operation, with a couple being built. For China to really project their power they would have to do so through naval means, which would require a massive build up of vessels which could very well cripple their government through spending alone.

All in all, I think they will be a threat of sorts in the long term, but it may very well be quite some time before they could even conceive of trying anything over the top. For the next few decades at least a conventional war in which the US gets involved is a losing contest for China.

As per your bolded part of the post that is why I think this recent posturing in the Indian ocean,South China sea and the Taiwan straight could end up as a strategic and political blunder for them as they are chalenging the USA right now.

The USA could send 4 super carrier battlegroups in the Taiwan straight and President Trump Recognizing Taiwan's independence and they wont do anything unless they want to commit ecconomic and millitary suicide. And such embarrasment or fear of being destroyed may push their people to reject their goverments millitary adventurism.

Their population are all gung-ho rightnow about supporting Mr.Ping but once they realized how hard they will get hit and the reality of modern warfare sink in even some members of the millitary and the communist party might depose Ping

Eh, I don't think Even Trump would push for a war with China unless necessary. Even though it would be relatively one sided, the economics of it would be crippling as the ground war (if it came to that) would take it's toll rather quickly. Taiwanese people does not want to belong to China the Taiwanese are also Chinese it is after all the "Republic of China" thats like saying South Korea belongs to Korea.

Rebublic China came first they get booted of the mainland but the Maoist are poor and can't make Taiwan turn into a communist state.

They have to deal with it and move on.
