ISLAM MAKHACHEV WILL BE NEXT UFC LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION

Plenty of topics in the interview, from Chandler's recent comments about Makhacev, to who they want next if they win the title.

- Javier talked about how the fight with Charles is going to play out
“Well, first of all, he’s gonna take him down. It’s just a matter of when, but he will take him down, and Charles is not gonna be able to stand. If Islam doesn’t want to stand, he will not, he’ll be taken down. He is second to Khabib in being able to take people down, and he will go down. Charles will go down. Charles is not known to be a wrestler. Also, keep in mind, Charles has got such a phenomenal Jiu Jitsu game. In MMA, in pure Jiu Jitsu, he’s probably got the best game in the lightweight division."

“The bottom line is, the thing about this fight is, wanna stand up? Okay, let’s go. Going to the ground? Okay, let’s go. So, we’ll see who can dominate where when that time comes. But we’re prepared to dominate in the standup, we’re prepared to dominate on the ground. And they are too. They’re well prepared. He’s a champion for a reason.”

- Javier said Khabib never lost a sparring session ever.
“In all the history, since 2012, since Khabib’s been doing sparring with me in front of my eyes, there has been nobody that’s ever taken a round from him. No one’s ever won a sparring session. Not a sparring session with Khabib ever. Except one man. Islam,” Mendez said. “He’s the only one that has won rounds from Khabib. Never won a session, but he’s won rounds. And I’ve never seen that."

- Javier on who they want next. Rules out Conor Mcgregor because of the Khabib's father covid remarks.
"For me the interesting challenge is Alex. He is a great sportsman, he is a gentleman. And if you’re asking me what I would want and who, as a sports person, not as an entertainment, but if you’re talking about sports who deserves the right? A hundred percent him, one hundred percent. He’s a class act, he comes from a very reputable gym that’s got class coaches. And they stick up for their team. I like what they represent. I like the way they stick up for each other. How they’re like of band of brothers, just like my guys are a band of brothers. I respect them. A very, very high, very, very high opinion of those guys. Very high."

What do my sherbros think?

I respect Javier and agree with most of what he said excet for his statement that they're prepared to dominate Charles in the stand-up. The threat of the takedown may make Charoes more tentative on the feet (just as it was for Khabib's opponents), but Charles is way ahead of Makhachev in the stand-up.

I agree. Charles striking is so underrated. He schooled Kevin Lee, can match Dustin, and even dropped Gaethje.

Nothing but facts.

I remember Volk saying he'd be at the event. Honestly though Beneil Dariush should get the next shot.

Sounds to me like Khabib only eased off on Islam, thus making it seem like he won rounds. Confidence booster. Yes men. Charles will sleep him.

Threads like these are why the mega thread was created. It brings almost nothing to the discussion. Of course a fighter's coach thinks he's going to win, lol.

This is also the tenth video of Mendez being interviewed about it and saying the same things.

Is it just me, or does anyone else get the vibe that AKA is slipping lately? Islam is the only fighter from that gym I can think of who's doing big things at the moment. I ask this because I've noticed a trend that any time a coach of a major gym starts doing a lot of interviews, that's a sign the gym is going down-hill. I've noticed it with Jackson-Wink, TriStar, and SBG Ireland. I would also say Glendale, but I think Edmund was always a con artist.

Islam isn't going to be comfortable in any area of the fight. He's at a huge disadvantage striking at distance, needs to watch the guillotine and knees and elbows in the clinch, needs to watch his neck in scrambles, and Charles is a sub threat off his back

AKA is amazing with the mind games. They talk so much about their fighters being invincible that people really do start believing it. They did it with Cain, Khabib, and now Islam.

It’s a great strategy because half of their opponents go in that cage already shitting themselves. Everyone knows it’s 100% bull shit, but there’s still that what if in the back of the head.
