Champs "staying busy"

Let's say a champ is ready to fight, but contenders aren't. Should they take on a random bum to "stay busy," or wait for a contender? If Leon were ready and the only available guy was Niko Price, would that be acceptable?

I just find this narrative funny since Bellator was flayed for doing stay-busy fights for their champs while tournaments were in process.

If Niko Price was on a good win streak yes. Wtf kind of dumb question is this?

I feel like title defenses every 6 should be mandatory. Give it to the best available guy.
You cant make anything mandatory in MMA. Theres too much of MMA's own rules that make that impossible. Sometimes the whole div is booked up. It doesnt always make sense. Sometimes you have to wait.

But if you're just doing keep-em- busy title fights, you're gonna hit situations where a worthy guy isn't getting a shot because of scheduling conflict, silly injury with a short recovery, something, while a non worthy guy gets the fight.

You think meritocracy is bad now, it is non existent under "keep em busy" format.
I don't see how Colby is related to that Muhammad and Shavkat should both be in front of Colby for a title shot.

I'll say yes, just because I want to see fights. I get very frustrated with the lack of big title fights. Lets take HW belt for example.... Cain used to fight once every 2 years, then Stipe used to fight once every 18 months, its ridiculous, we hardly get any title fights, now Francis has 1 title defense and leaves, and he never fought much either.. Francis used to fight once a year and he was not even champion.. its just beyond ridiculous.

Cain was a weird case because he got injured every other week with some new "mysterious" injury.. however Stipe and Francis didn't have injuries, they were fine and just never fought much, its so frustrating. I know Stipe is only a part time fighter but yeah as fans its just boring and so lame, its what has made UFC weaker and weaker

So for example Blaydes is not number 1 contender and has never had a title shot, he is a bit down the pack, but if there was no one to fight then hell yes I want Jones vs Blaydes because I want to see big time title fights, not just twiddling their thumbs and coming up with another mysterious injury or mysterious problem and issue to not fight

In the neighborhood of 6 months is what most champions do anyway, so it's definitely very much possible.

Regarding divisions being all booked up sometimes... The simple solution would be to not do that around the time that a challenger will be needed.

On not always making sense: Izzy-Stricland doesn't make sense. Rockhold-Bisping didn't make sense. Worst case scenario is you get a massive upset that will be remembered for years, which really isn't a bad thing.

Rockhold bisping II was a matchup that was already booked, and Bisping slotted in as a replacement. Strickland vs Izzy makes enough sense. Some things do,some dont. Rockhold and Bisping had a history from a prior matchup and people really wanted to see him finally get a title shot. Strickland vs Izzy can def generate interest even if no one believes he will win. Some matchups wouldnt even have have that interest, and arent worth doing.

Nothing is ever gonna be Mandatory. UFC makes enough rules they dont follow,so why bother making another one?

If a marketable champion cant defend in 6 months or 16 months, they dont give a shit

Those would be the kind of fights that would happen so if you can justify them then you shouldn't have a problem with it. It's not like you would give the shot to some random outside the top 10.

Arguing that they're not going do it so there's no point in bringing it up is ridiculous considering this whole thread is asking people to state how they would like it to be <45>.

Honestly the more marketable champions aren't even the problem. Izzy and Volk are the most marketable now and they fight very regularly. Same with GSP, Silva and Jones back in the day. It's typically the unmarketable ones like Edwards who want to sit on titles.

No. That could easily blow up in Leon's and the UFC's face. One lucky punch from Niko and he turns the whole division into a joke. Not worth the risk imo..

Better to wait for a worthy contender..
Or take a fun fight at a higher weight class the way Silva did.

I don't mind if its a last minute nobody replacement like TJ/Soto. When a champ has cleared out the division then fighting lower guys in top 15 is fine. It's just the highest ranked fresh match up. If they are #25 oh well.

I rather add less turmoil but the fight fiend in me says "more fights!". Some guys I just like to see fight and don't care much who as long as it's decent. That said with the squirrely rankings mattering and not mattering and injuries, "flukes", etc. I'd rather not muddy the water.

Fedor took fights in between his Pride title defenses. And Silva ventured up to 205.

I have always said you book divisions from the champ down. When the champ is good to fight, you should have the best challenger lined up or a title eliminator already on the books.

Now sometimes, based on timing, you either get an earned contender, or you get the 'closest contender currently standing' like Strickland. But the UFC is so full of talent, that if Leon is ready and the best they have is Niko Price, they have ROYALLY fucked up their booking. I get that injuries happen and timing can screw with everything, but any time you're dipping past even #8, it's cuz you have fucked up as a promotion in keeping that division moving and ready
