Chael Sonnen: Lombard Broke No Rules

I thought it should have been a NC. It was close enough to the bell

Fuck your rules chael. Hector is a wanker on this occasion, that punch should never have been thrown

So if someone sees Chael in the grocery store & suckers him, is it ok because he's been told throughout his career to "protect yourself at all times"

He did punch him after the ref said stop though

Not long after, but he did

Whether it's his fault he broke the rules or not is one conversation but it's a fact that he did break the rules

My opinion was it should be a DQ.

He didn’t have to throw that combo. And, trying to blame the ref is lame as fuck, imo.

It was in the heat of the moment, I dont think CB even had set his foot back down from the kick yet.

The ref is the one who needs to be all in the action when the bell is getting close, especially if they are trading near the end (after 10sec clap) of the rounds.

Hes right, Ive sat in numerous pre-fight meetings and its always the same thing, “protect yourself at all times”.

Should be a N/C and a rematch

For me though Hector won by KO

It's a tricky situation. The move was cheap but might not be against the rules. The ref did say stop but he was a little too far away.

Big picture wise it doesn't really matter much though. It's not like there's a title implication just a minor screw up.

I mean if anybody knows anything about breaking rules it's Chael.

Chael didn't break any rules with his real estate scam either. Chael knows the rules.

I love all the keyboard warriors who expect Lombard to be able to alter his punching instincts at the drop of a hat. That shit is hard-wired into his muscles and it was far from egregious. It was late, but just barely. DC had already commented several times how countering kicks with punches is part of Lombard's game. And when I rewatched it, paused it and slowed it down the first punch was landing as the bell started to ring, and the second punch was being thrown as the bell was still sounding and just as the ref yelled "time".

I don't think this was anyone's fault. The ref was calling time as the bell was still sounding, and Lombard was instinctually counter-punching as the kick landed and while the bell was still ringing. It's crazy to me that 1 second is the difference between a KO win and DQ loss. I think a NC would have been more fair, but it's an interesting gray area in the rules.
