Let's give it up for the American Gangster, Sherdog.
Love him or hate him, he made fans and haters alike look forward to seeing his matches. His humor, wit, and antics were unparalleled in a stagnant era in MMA. Sure, many will point out that he didn't invent trash talk. Of course he didn't. He just took it to another level, and basically sold 1 million PPV's with his sharp tongue (Silva / Sonnen 2), despite his not-so-exciting style.
His win over Shogun was one of the most memorable moment his fans (myself included) reveled in, and MMA was just not the same after he left the scene. The advent of Conor McGregor might have soothed the aching hearts of some Sonnen fans, but there will be only one Chael Patrick Sonnen.
Chael Sonnen, thank you for entertaining us and being a breath of fresh air in mixed martial arts.
