I have limited training experiece but it seems to me that having a considerable reach and height disadvantage not only makes it harder for you to land shots at distance but also makes them less powerful by being on the end of your arm's reach and providing more room for the opponent to dodge and roll with the punches. I have always thought that Conor's apparent "great chin" vs Mendes was way more due to the fact that the punches were barely touching him than to his chin's absortion. The same seems to have happened to some extent with Diaz' absortion of Conor's shots at distance (notice that a cut doesn't necessarily mean a hard blow). I'd like to read opinions of people with more training background.

Keep in mind Nate Diaz is a very good boxer. Any boxer worth his weight in salt can roll with punches negating some power.
