The most realistic assessment of what happened is that they beat her, but didn't rape her. That's the verdict of the Armstrong Report and of the prosecutor that decided to vacate the convictions. It's bizarre that these individuals are put on the pedestal that they are.

Lol, the gang rapists who beat people on bicycles with lead pipes, sucker punched and stomped out homeless people, beat a man unitl "the victim looked like his head got dunked in a bucket of blood", then gang raped a jogger into a coma and left her for dead are now mascots for the "pro woman" party.
John Loughlin was the school teacher who had both eye sockets caved in and his skull cracked, and Stephen Lopez did plead guilty.
There were like 30 "youths" there, the ones who did know him pointed to Yusef by name, and several more who didn't know his name referred to him as "the 6'3 black kid with the high top fade" as the lead instigator of violence swinging lead pipes at bikers and joggers.
They fucking had dirt from the crime scene and semen in the pants they were wearing, confessed, and it wasn't just their own confessions, the other thugs who were beating strangers pointed at them too, there was more than 5 hours in between the gang rape and them finding Trisha Meili in a ditch left for dead. One of the other "youths" who ran from police with Kevin Richardson said in the patrol car "I didn't do the murder, but I know who did" 5 hours before they even knew Trisha Meila was attacked. Antron ran her down as she was running away, she was screaming "please stop, somebody help me please" as they beat the fuck out of her and raped her, Stephen Lopez called Korey Wise a "punk" for just "playing with her legs" and didn't fuck her, while Yusef cut her pants off and "played with her breasts".
They weren't "exonerated", a judge vacated the conviction, which NY could have appealed and retried, but they had already served their sentence and Bill DeBlasio decided to give them $14 million of taxpayer money instead for gang raping a woman who is still alive and still says there were multiple attackers. Matias Reyes was the one who jizzed in her because the others couldn't stay hard or finish, but the others raped her, beat her, and Matias Reyes was either part of the group raping her, or he came by within the 5 hours before police found her and raped the seemingly dead body as well. How the fuck Matias Reyes' DNA in Trisha Meili somehow "exonerates" Stephen Lopez from smashing an entirely separate male person with a lead pipe is still a mystery.
