I've always been interested in this type of work. Whenever I would get an injury, physiotherapists would make me do these types of exercises to heal the injury and often times you come back stronger than before. So i've always believed that a program that incorporates this type of stuff would make you less injury prone and a better athlete.

Do any of you know more about this stuff? Such as the best web sites/books to read up on? This is the only Marinovich book I found.

Amazon.com: ProBodX: Proper Body Exercise: The Path to True Fitness (9780060959951): Marv Marinovich, Edythe M. Heus, Ronda Spinak, Alan Duncan Ross: Books

I'd love to find a trainer to start on a program in my area but I wouldn't know where to find one. This isn't exactly standard fare for your average gym trainer.

If you are a fighter? maybe, although unstable surface training is bullshit. Look at Rosstraining.com for the best bw and conditioning stuff around.

If you want to get stronger, then unstable surface training is even more bullshit.
You engage plenty of stabilization when you squat/dl/bench heavy. Your CNS will also be activated more by heavy lifting than it will be through unstable surface bullshit. Unstable surface training is a fad that jackasses use to sell useless shit. The term "Functional" is also pretty worthless. A legitimate workout program, the 5x5 for example, will do you far more good in terms of strength and injury prevention then that stuff will. Provided of course you don't lift like an idiot and maintain good form.

Read the FAQ, I'm sure it will answer some questions.
Do you really want to take conditioning and strength advice from BJ "Burrito" Penn?

I don't think you'll find very many favorable opinions of Marv Marinovich here, or anywhere in the S&C community. He's kind of a psycho. BJ Penn's successes have never been because of a strength advantage.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I actually bought the Rosstraining books a few years ago and they are probably some of the best fitness instructional stuff i've ever bought. Built a home gym because of it and got great results when I followed it.

The reason I'm interested in the Marinovich stuff is because of imbalances that develop when i'm training. Could be stuff like a weaker left leg...or pains that may develop from running. As well as increases in balance/dexterity/etc...

So is there better programs for balance, dexterity, etc....or do you guys think they're all a waste of time?

A recent addition to my collection is Cressey's Maximum Strength. The warmups and work outs are designed with what you seem to have in mind. Some of the lifts are odd lifts that I've never done before and always considered a lift for rehab.

The book is written with a begining lifter in mind so there is a lot of knowledge in there you probably already know, but the base program is written to prevent or correct imbalances, but still being centered around a classical barbell based strength program.

I have that Cressey book, Maximum Strength, and I have to say that I learned a lot from the flexibility and mobility section that I use to this day. That section alone is worth the price of the book IMO. He also has a DVD called Magnificent Mobility, but I have not seen it so I cannot comment on it.

Also, if you look at the programs designed by top-notch athletic coaches, Cressey, Cosgrove, Defranco, etc. They all have some things in common. They all have unilateral work and mobility exercises built in.

what about that Pete Sisco guy? wouldn't want to step into a dangerous field though

They don't call him 'the prodigy' because he has a good athletic trainer.

I've seen some of the things he has BJ do and it looks like some of them might make decent warmup exercises.

Kind of a bad example. BJ's successes have not been because of a strength advantage, but because of his other physical advantages. So this means that maybe whatever it is that he is doing to get this advantage is an important thing if it beats a strength advantage.

Marinovich has been training Troy Polomalu for awhile too. Results usually speak for themselves. He might be crazy but the guy knows his shit.

Both of them were already good before he trained them.

you don't get hair like that training on unstable surfaces.

Troy Polamalu was a great safety when he trained with conventional methods. Marv Marinovich claims that weightlifting causes most sports injuries, how many games has Polamalu missed with injuries while training with magical medicine balls and wobble boards in the NFL? People have said for years that if BJ Penn actually dedicated himself to the sport and weight class he could be a great. So maybe whatever Marv is doing is enough to keep BJ going and living up to his potential, but you are making a rule out of an exception. BJ has only had one fight with Marv and looked great, but BJ looking great for one fight against a sizeable underdog is nothing new or evidence of shocking proof.

Polamalu has been hurt the past 2 years basically. Before that he hadn't even missed a practice in college, let alone a game.

Polamalu is also the best defensive player in the NFL, if you think MM had something to do with it, then you can't be helped.

The last thing BJ needs is more balance and flexibility. BJ's always looking for a secret workout that magically gives him a great conditioning without having to work hard. Running the rock, slow ass jogging, now training with this guy. Their's no secret, if BJ does guys like Diego's and GSP's strength and conditioning program then he'll have conditioning like them, or at least maximise his cardio potential. I think BJ knows what to do, but having grown up rich he just finds it boring as hell, so he doesn't do it.

If Diego can secure a takedown in the 1st round Saturday things could get interesting. Diego's not a great wrestler, but he finds a way. Karo threw him all over the place yet he still secured top position.

I know everyone hates Marinovich but seems to me that BJ looks a little faster:

Despite having (in my opinion) a ridiculous training philosophy, nobody an question the fact that MM trains whoever he's training really hard. That's pretty much how he drove his son crazy, after all.

I think that's the core of it - BJ clearly isn't interested in traditional training and Marv pushes him hard. His conditioning has been clearly improved in his last few fights.

Doing something is better than doing nothing. Also, did everyone notice Frank Mir training with Mark Philippi?
