Media Cedric Doumbe claims to be "the face of MMA" in France over BSD / Gane

My posts were half serious but my point is he's in the B leagues fighting lesser known opponents in front of smaller audiences than the UFC names he mentioned. Gane & BSD can still reach far greater heights than anything Doumbe can do even if he makes his way to PFL gold someday.

What has how high a ceiling a fighter has got to do with their current popularity in a certain country?

He sells and would sell more tickets as of right now than Gane and BSD could do. Doesn't matter how good they are or how good they can be.

Cedric is talking himself into a big fraud check :/

Let’s see if French TDD is a thing.

There shouldn't even be a debate. You've got a very decorated KB champ that is now crossing over to MMA and scoring 7 sec KO's vs two dudes who only became relevant in MMA somewhat recently.

Gane hadn't even debuted in MMA when Doumbe was picking up a win over Holzken.

what about Ngannou? or is he considered Cameroon only now?

Maybe our Sherbro’s from France can tell us who’s the biggest name in French combat sports right now?

Depends on demographics. New and young audience knows Doumbe better because of social media, the older and long time MMA fans are obviously more interested in UFC fighters.

That said, I would say Doumbe. He is famous just by himself.
Gane and BSD are part of the UFC system, they are famous as UFC fighter taking part in big UFC events. Gane is the established big name, but is loss to Jones and then ducking Aspinall quite hurt his brand. BSD is the rising star is the start division, huge potential if he keeps winning.

lol what a tool

gane, bsd, hell even abdouraguimov are all bigger draws than him
Certainly not Abdouraguimov.
And BSD is not filling Accor arena fighting a local fighter outside the UFC.

There's no hard and fast rule on how to measure this "face of French MMA" claim. it's up for debate and interpretation. UFC tries to build guys globally and have them participate in big events anywhere and everywhere, it's not really comparable to what PFL is doing with Doumbe. Who knows how long it will be before he ever even fights outside of France.

Just saying it would be a better claim to be the face of French MMA to have held a belt like Gane has (and who knows, perhaps an undisputed one is still in his future) for the largest promotion in the world and be globally recognized.

Compared to the much lower stage of global recognition (within MMA) Doumbe is currently at fighting guys without wikipedia pages in the B-tier promotion.

Doumbe has 5 Glory title defenses, lol at comparing that to Gane holding an undeserved interim title once. His last fight got more social media attention than Gane's. He's a bigger name despite being in a second tier promotion

When I think "face of French MMA" I'm thinking who is achieving the most in the cage vs the highest level guys with the most eyes on them. That's obviously Gane, who knows how good Doumbe is in MMA (let's leave kickboxing out of it lol) until he fights a live body with a pulse that someone has heard of.

I'm talking real ratings and buys btw that UFC will always be head and shoulders above PFL, not Instagram & YT views.

You think Doumbe could beat Magomedkerimov or Jackson any time soon? I doubt it. Yeah Gane has had his stumbles but he still has a lot of quality names on his resume for someone relatively young in MMA.

Doumbe has more social media followers and more YouTube views for his last fight. And his fights aren't even being aired in the U.S. He's bigger in France, period. He's their face.

Fair enough, I just think there's a lot higher that the "face" can go than fighting no names in a lesser promotion. I guess I'll just have to be patient & see how the next few years shape up as Doumbe's level of opposition rises.

who the hell is Cedric Doumbe and BSD? God, I hate the new MMA =/.

We've gone from "Franklin vs Silva" as a headliner to "BSD vs Doumbe"

Once the old heads are all gone, this old head will be too =/

OK boomer + casual

Franklin's fighting abilities were nowhere near newcomer's like St.Denis are.

And Silva isn't even half the kickboxer Doumbé is.

Currently inside of France it's Doumbe by far no contest.

Then you have Gane. Then BSD. Then Baki. (Gane is losing steam to those two if we're honest).

Then Parnasse.

After that there's not much difference in popularity, even a guy like Imamov isn't really well known amongst casuals despite being an UFC top 15. For fighters like Lalipus or Lazy King it's really people who follow to sport who know them.

Edit: for people talking about world rankings and legitimacy and stuff I am answering based on popularity. How much they appear on national TV, on social media, how well known are their sponsorship etc. Even the impact they have on pop culture, like the other day I gifted boxing gloves to my son and my sister in law jokingly said that he's going to become the next "Cedric doumbe or khabib nomogedov" (lol). She never watched a fight in her life, she just knows those two names because she kept hearing them. Doumbe's popularity has just exploded beyond limit in the last year.

And while Doumbé is a great fighter, he's also an annoying big mouth whose popularity mainly comes from french muslim community who's the majority in France's combat sports

On the other hand, BSD with his catholic tattoos and army background, is popular among the "indigenous" ones

It's really not a stretch to say he is the most popular fighter in France. I assume most Western/Central Europeans who are fans of mma are also fans of kickboxing and that's where his almost entire career has been. PFL holds shows in Europe and they invest in that market. He's hardly known by Americans but French people are probably well aware of who he is.
