Cauliflower Ear Drainage

I had mine drained by a doctor. What they did was make an incision in the ear and drain the blood out, although that was because it was really badly swollen. I got lucky because I went to a doctor who had actually drained an ear during a wrestling tournament so she knew what she was doing and didn't butcher the ear. You can still see the damage but it would have been a whole lot worse had I not gone.

Just an update...I actually did in fact get some head gear this weekend (basic Asics model at Sports Authority) and it wasn't as bad as I thought. Not terribly uncomfortable and I could tell it saved me from a couple of decent shots or shoulder pressure grindings that would have caused my ear to blow up. If you are on the fence about wearing it you should definitely give it a shot. I plan on using for a couple of weeks and then see how my ear reacts without it again.

Some guys actually dig the cauliflower ear look and my grappling instructor, Pedro Castro, is sometimes called Batman because of his ears. That's quite all right, if I need to get mine drained an office visit is only $10-.

i will go back to the doc after my tourney next weekend and see if he will give me a referral to a otalaryngologist (sp??)

Some doctors will slice your ear and stitch it up which sucks because it means you have to be off the mat for a week or so (which is what happened to me), but I've heard horror story's of people making their ears worse doing it themselves so I'd stick with the doctors.

You'll also want some headgear for a while after otherwise it'll just get swollen right back up again.

i have got headgear and i am wearing it now... i am debating wearing it in the tournament on the weekend though, least when you are rolling in class if it gets pulled down over your face, i can tell the guy to wait a minute while i fix it up

As said before always go to a doctor so they could drain it in sterile fashion. The last thing you want to have is a post-drainage abcess on your ear which will keep you away from the mats for much longer. Also go to your MD promptly before the hematoma (blood collection) hardens, therefore leaving you with cauliflower ear. Unless you are into the cauliflower look that is...

OK, i competed without the headgear and it got knocked in my first fight and blew up like a balloon, here is the pic

and then on monday i got someone to drain it for me and they managed to get 1ml of blood out of it.

i wasn't happy with how it looked so i went back the the doc, and he sent me for a ultrasound so he could get a good look at it before draining it.
and then he managed to get another 2ml's out and it looks a lot better

Lol call me a pussy but I'm so scared of getting cauli ear.

Does it hurt to get it drained? Is it likely it will happen to me?

Wow, this is a good thread. I just began the development of cauli. It's slight and I don't mind, even if a few friends have noticed it without me pointing it out. I'm wearing headgear now to prevent anything more. Most people don't notice it unless I point it out. Good luck with everything and keep us updated.

i recently have started to feel a burning and "chunk " in the top of my right ear. Its nice to see pics and get the corretc info on it on this thread.

The drainage of it doesn't hurt as much as laying on the sore ear when you go to sleep, just some stinging for a few seconds until the needle comes out.

If you're doing it yourself, you need to remember to ice it after you drain it. You can take some Advil, too, to help with blood flow and inflammation.

To the guy who is feeling the burning, be careful. That could mean you're getting an infection. It might be time to see the doctor.

My ears still look somewhat decent after 10 years because I am too uncoordinated to drain my own ears. I have either gone to the doctor or to my sister (who runs an emergency room).

OK guy's frodo was right i did need it drained again, here is the new pic

also you will love the slurping noise when the doc pulls the needle out

Headgear. "It may suck, but it's better than looking like a monster."
