Caught my kid smoking pot

I started smoking weed at age 13 our weed was way weaker in 1999 tho. Teenagers are doing crazy stuff like dabs nowadays that is pretty harmful in my opinion to smoke a concentrate 8x the power of an already strong flower it is crack head behavior.

Out of interest have you ever been an alcoholic or a drug addict?
Not really, but I've known quite a few. I have done my share of drugs and partied a lot, but the only consistent issue I ever had is smoking way too much weed. These days I mostly just stay sober.

I think she'll be fine. Smoking it recreationally it's not big deal imo.

depends on the person and the drugs effect. Lots of alcoholics who die from it started off as "no big deal" type of drinking. My brother started smoking when he worked with losers at a burger joint, most of those people or at least some of them, quit smoking. He had to go to ER twice last year for COPD and he's still smoking.

I know what you mean, it opens doors to other substances indeed. But I think she'll be fine, it's all about moderation imo. But easier said than done.

in all seriousness, what's the reasonable no nonsense approach these days to something like this? you don't want to lie to them like they did in the 80s and 90s, but also don't encourage them to do something that could harm them.

I don't have kids so take my advice for what it's worth. If you are going to have a stricter guideline for consequences, be prepared to have a shiny reward system for good behavior or you might lose a direct line of communication with her

probably my best friend in life totally changed after smoking pot. Gradually, at first he was just lazier, slower, more mellow but as he got older, he got more and more paranoid, more and more reclusive and I always suspected he moved on to other drugs but I don't know. He attacked me the last time, not physically, but morally like I was out to get him or something. It was weird. I swore then I'd never even deal with another addict, period. Not argue again about how it's not that bad or that it's good or whatever or deal with the shame that they project.

Waste of time to have them in your life in general. Even the people that can handle pot that I know of are just goofy and make silly mistakes and slow you down if you're working with them.

It's why I told my cousin "you need treatment" didn't and won't waste another breath on him, I didn't raise him, I didn't fuck him up and I'm not gonna get drawn in. My brother is a different story, I only wish I could forget about him. Instead, I had a sore throat this morning from hanging out at his place last night.

alright, so joe hogan's weed propaganda from the 2010s was no good.

studies seem to show that it's bad (quick AI search):

Key Findings on Marijuana Effects
  • Brain and Cognition: A major 2025 study found that 63% of heavy users showed reduced brain activity during memory tasks. Long-term users may experience up to an 8-point IQ drop, with deficits in processing speed.
  • Mental Health: Strong evidence links marijuana use to an increased risk of psychosis, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders.
  • Physical Health: Smoking marijuana is associated with lung issues, including chronic bronchitis. Frequent use is also linked to higher risks of stroke and heart attack.
  • Usage Risks: Heavy use can cause Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (vomiting/nausea).
  • Medical Use: While it can aid in treating chronic pain, epilepsy, and chemotherapy-induced nausea, high-THC products may come with significant side effects.
  • Developmental Concerns: Use during pregnancy can lead to restricted fetal growth and poor cognitive development.
Key Studies and Evidence
  • CU Anschutz Medical Campus (2025): Examined over 1,000 young adults (22–36) and found significant impacts on working memory.
  • Harvard Health (2022): Highlighted that long-term users had smaller hippocampi and lower IQs, although those using less than once a week showed few deficits.
  • NIDA (.gov) (2024): Detailed long-term respiratory, cardiac, and mental health risks.

just tell them what I told my cousin, you need treatment and leave it up to them. Don't do anything outside of that. I'm not qualified or equipped to deal with addiction, i hit the fucking roof the second time i got a call from ER for my brother. If i could cut him loose i would. Life is tough for everyone, you don't need people that distract or deter from your own life and survival. They don't want to live or be a positive get the fuck away from me.

Sorry to hear about your friend. That's too bad.

If that's true, then it explains a few things. Some of the pot heads I've known may not have had 8 points to give up in the first place though...

thanks, I took it very seriously. Also, I also looked at myself and mistakes I might have made. I took things for granted, he cosigned on music equipement for me, was always there to help in a crisis and he probably thought I didn't appreciate him or whatever. I don't really know because at the end, we only spoke every couple years or so with me being oblivious to what he was thinking. So, I'm saying, he might have had valid reasons to go nuts, I don't really know, it was so out of character and just plain weird.

I learned from it so I try to compensate people fairly and at the first opportunity I get, either with money, work or whatever I can think of, to the point of overcompensating so they don't have much to say. At the same time, I don't let too many people in these days, even the ones that help, I really don't see more than a few times every couple months or so. Live and learn, and no more addicts, it distorts everything about a person.

Also, I never appreciated the pressure addicts exert on me to use whatever they are, the arguements over the benefits, the criticism for being an abstainer or what have you. That's one of the biggest factor in why people take that first hit. After that, depending, the substance can consume a person and cause chaos for everyone around them.
