What happened? Did he stop making music or did his music just suck afterwards?

I don't know but the music business is a young person's game for a lot of superficial reasons. You're hot today, passe tomorrow and the fans, critics and general public will let you know it no matter how good or bad your music is. Elvis and Prince did phenomenal music that went completely ignored in their later careers, common. Springsteen has put out at least one album that I thought was a good as any of his best and it got ignored; wrecking ball.

Jim Croce was amazing. This song has seemingly half a dozen hooks in it. Sucks that he was taken too soon. His live work is virtually identical to his records.

Hard to believe he's only 30 there.

Jim & Harry went much too soon. Gord had a long run and was still touring right up to the end.
