International Canada finalizes $19-billion purchase of F-35 fighter jets

Is this a smart buy for the Canadians?

Good. If we are going to step back from being the world's police other major countries are going to need capable armies.

It is my personal opinion that for too long other countries have been able to spend on themselves on things like education and Healthcare because we look out for you.

Huge sections of the Canadian population have been pushing, for a long bloody time, for us to meet our NATO obligations which we fall pathetically short of
What? Most people don't even know they exist.

Even the strongest liberal supporters have to see how 2-faced PM blackface is on this one. The purchase was a millimeter from being finalized in 2014/2015 by the competent defense minister Peter Mackay prior to Trudeau's pandering campaign against these jets. 8 years later and at almost double the price we are now buying THOSE jets. Ukraine was already firmly on the conservatives radar at that time, so waiting for a potential conflict cannot be used as any sort of reasoning.
Surely you jest.

He kiboshed billion dollar, signed, approved, reviewed and done pipeline projects due to optics yet delivered APCs to the Saudis on the grounds that international deals must be upheld lest foreign investors lose faith in doing business with Canada. His supporters don't give a single flying fuck about honesty, consistency or legitimacy. They're as fickle and shortsighted as toddlers.

Wait...why?

I assume that if Canada would get into a foreign entanglement that would require airplanes that go pew pew pew, that the US would be doing the heavy fighting. The US would certainly be involved in the same war that Canada would be involved in.

the americans can do the pew pew pew'ing. the canadians will just bomb the troublemakers countries with politeness, i'm sorries, and formal apologies.

fook around and find out eh?

The F-35 is a great jet. It received a lot of crap for its development, but it is an absolute awesome piece of military equipment. I think its important for Canada to have a capable military even though they are extremely unlikely to lead the charge into any conflict.

I mean I don’t know what Canada wants their military to be capable of so it’s hard to say it’s a good or bad purchase. I don’t know a whole ton about their military size and capabilities off the top of my head. My first thought is they could use that money to instead beef up on size, but maybe the jets are better as a force multiplier for them

Honestly, you're touching on one of the things that frustrates me most about my countrymen. Canada is, in historical terms, a piñata of a country - a borderline defenseless, low population, and resource rich country. Canadians, in countless ways, reap the benefits of the geographic bounty we inherited through the struggles of generations that lived tougher lives, and we take what we have for granted. The reason we get to keep what we have and not (easily) fall prey to nations with powerful militaries that might try and take what we have is that America has created a stable world where borders rarely change through force, and all but never when it is their allies. Whatever the excesses and evils of the American "empire," as a Canadian my cushy life is held up by boots and grit of American soldiers and American influence around the world - far moreso than anything we do as a nation. We are some of the greatest beneficiaries of American foreign policy, and the people who live here almost habitually spit on the forces that keep our way of life secure.

I don't like being so dependent on a foreign nation for my way of life, but it's a reality. When I visit the States - and I do quite frequently - I thank the soldiers there for their service as earnestly, and perhaps even moreso, than I thank our own national troops. Those guys have done more to keep Canada safe and secure than 95% of the population of our country would ever admit. Hats off America - though you're not perfect by any stretch and I do believe you should be earnestly critiqued for many things, there are some Canadians who realize just how much we rely on you, and say thanks for our way of life, rather than spitting south of the border. Fuck do we have it good, and all because someone else keeps the wolves at bay.

The $1.7 trillion dollar price tag that many have used to dog the F-35 program is the cost over the life time of the plane. Many are expecting a 50-60 year service. With an actual development cost of around $400 billion dollars. Yep that a hell of a pill, that was double the original estimated cost.

However that program is what led to a revamping of how building military jets in the future (NGAD) will happen, instead of a full air frame, it will be broken down in to different aspects. The idea is this will lead to more companies being abe to actual bid on different parts of the planes in the future. This should speed up development drastically and be extremely cheaper. As the US is expecting the replacement for the F-22 by 2030.

Now for Canada and other allie Nations actually purchasing the F-35 makes so much sense. They arent eating that development cost, and get a plane they can rely on for half a century. As more countries order the F-35 the cost per plane should drop.

To some some extent yes, but part of the issue with the F-35 was splitting manufacturing over 40-odd states. Go figures that's not economically efficient.

I really can't imagine a situation where Canada would need these. Any war with Russia in the Artic would instantly involve the US through NATO, any war with the US would result in Canada not having an air force in about two seconds, and another adventure in the Middle East would not need this level of technology.

You're quite Canadian lately, with that AV and all.

100% this.
I imagine it will be for our foreign commitments.

88 planes. Yeah. I doubt we can find enough pilots & ground crew to keep them all flying by the time they're delivered given the sad path our military is on.
Was thinking the same thing myself. Wonder if they'd give a 51 year old the chance to fly one of those?

well put. with that being said, you can laugh at canada's military all you want but their hockey team will still kick your ass.

fook around and find out eh? now you will all be sorry.

Nah. Fulfillment of purchase slated within the next 3 years. Squadrons have to be stood up and receive the jets. Maintainers have to train on fueling and fixing them. Pilots have to be trained. Canada has to establish parts repair and replacement.

Everyone can fuck around as much as they want in the next few years as it concerns Canada and their upcoming F-35's.

3 years? shit, the vancouver canucks might finally win a game by then.

Haha, nice. They're fairly mediocre this year, aren't they? I admittedly haven't followed hockey or any pro sport for the last few years.

I know that the Flyers should rename themselves the Dumpster Fires.

the canucks would want that name too. lets just say that this year has gone to shit on them. perhaps they need to pull off a blockbuster trade with Philly. they've got a pretty cool mascot who knows how to tie up a pair of skates. do you think he's able to stop a puck?
