Guida is impossible for me not to love -- he's a former wrestler who works his ass off and is able to just will his way past opponents. He's like the ultimate blue collar fighter with an appropriate nickname.

In his first 22 fights (pre-SF/UFC), he was 18-4 and finished 14 of them. Once he got to the big leagues and the competition got stiffer he went 17-15 and only finished 6 of his wins. Also, in those 32 fight in the SF/UFC era he was finished 9 times.

The ultimate blue collar, every day journeyman that this sport needs.

You make an appreciation thread and you label him as a journeyman?

He was losing to champions or tittle contenders only. Usually in competitive fights. And beat some of them as well. Journeymen get beat before even reaching that stage so often.
I guess you can call him a gatekeeper but certainly not just a journeyman

Clay fought an old teammate of mine (Vito Woods) back in the day. I remember thinking “holy fuck this dude has energy”. Really cool guy post fight too. Drank a shit ton at the after party lol.

...GOAT candidate?

Maybe. I'd have to study and see how many people beat him en route to a title fight.

Gatekeeper > journeyman or journeyman > gatekeeper considering his history?

I feel like with like 28 UFC fights (forget the record) journeyman isn't necessarily wrong.

I love the dude. Always down to scrap. A true fighter. And seemingly always fighting the top level talent.

Clay seems like a genuinely good dude. He'd be a cool guy to get a beer and talk fights with.

I loved it when he beat Nate. That would be my favourite Guida moment. One of my all time favourite fighters.
The fact he holds 3 wins in a row against RDA, Gomi, and prime Pettis is hilarious though.
Fun fact he beat Josh Thompson as well who TKO'd Nate's face off.

The definition of an average fighter
You see, I agree with you based off the fact his record is very confusing. his fighting style is stupid. but the man is gold for some reason.

Man, if you fight 28 times in UFC always fighting the top talent, as you say, by definition that's far from a journeyman.

The top talents are not so by beating journeymen

Well, I listed his notable wins/losses in the OP. Since he went 6-12 against top MMA talent that's what I went with.

I'm open for input

Thats basically a statement to his consistency and longevity

Those guys he lost to were champions, or at least tittle contenders. A win over Guida often gave you, at least, the opportunity to fight for the #1 contender status. Definition of a gatekeeper, I guess?

Its not like you are a champion/tittle contender otherwise you are a journeyman lol. Its not like that in any sport.

A guy who holds wins over Dos Anjos, Pettis, Diaz, Thomson...Hioki, Gomi, Kawajiri...among other top LWs...is far from a journeyman, period.

Champion
Contender
Journeyman
Average

Is this how many of you think about journeyman?
