Can a throat strike end a fight?

How the hell could they determine whether it was targeted on purpose?
I think it would just be a judgement call based on subjective analysis of things such as: did it look like the offender saw the open throat and threw a strike that would be very likely to land there and do damage?

Were there other legal openings that the offender passed up on to land the illegal strike or, conversly and maybe even more damningly, were there NO other openings but the throat so the offender decided to just strike it anyway?

I'm just guessing and would like to hear what others think might constitute clues of culpability for an illegal strike.

I guess another would be if the fighter has a history of exploiting the illegal strike in question, eg Jon Jones or Travis Browne with eye-pokes or Palhares and leg destruction/eye gouging or Kongo and cup checks.

One can be lethal and theyre rightfully illegal in MMA. A friend of mine was hit in the throat and his mom insisted that he went to the hospital. He did, the doctor diagnosed a bent trachea and that had he not come he most likely would have died in his sleep that night.

very hard to do with gloves and the small target. But if landed can not only end the fight, but also kill the person.

Marcus davis ko'ed a guy with a neck punch.

Rewatching Woodley vs Wonderboy and @ around 4:44ish of the 3rd, Wonderboy throws a right hand to (some sort of) side kick combo. The kick hits Woodley in the chest, but what if it went a little higher and hit him in the throat and he couldn't continue? Is that a T(KO)? Or is the throat some gray area when it comes to the rules?

Illegal unless the recipient is a neckbeard.

Throat shots have killed people over the years. In real life obviously. Should look up "one punch murders"

Intentional is jail time.

Nice find.

Uppercut to the throat!

I hope that ringside doc had a pocket knife and a ballpoint pen.
